Came home from a friends birthday party, thought I would check the posts.

My computer which lives 24/7 was dead. First stop was the kitchen. Microwave was on and the time was correct so we hadn't had any power outages.

Double checked  the cord...  it was fine.

I yanked the power supply from another Dell that I had. Looked identical until I went to plug it into the motherboard. The dead one has a 20 pin molex connector. The good one has 24. UUUUUGHHHH DELL why can't you be standard.

May not be real active over the next few days...... until I get a new power supply.

The news ATX power suppies have the 24 pin molex connector.  It's the "new" standard as the newer boards all require it.  It has an extra set of 12 volt lines I believe.  You can pick them up almost anywhere, just make sure you get the 24 pin type.  My new dual core intel board uses that as well.

www.newegg.com has good prices and reasonable shipping fees.

Unfortunately my dead one only has the 20pins.... and does not use the new standard.
I will check out the web site. Thanks for the advice.

Jay,

Is it the standard PS/2 size power supply???  What wattage? Some of the power supplies out there now have a 24 pin connector, but if you look carefully you can detach the extra 4 pin part of the connector, and bingo you now have a 20 pin connector!!!  propeller propeller propeller  The extra 4 pin part can be tied up in the excess wire bundle. If you are in the land of no computer stores, just let me know. I may have something laying around my lab.  yes yes yes Do you have measurements if you need something, just to be safe. Let me know.

I went to that NewEgg site after all my whining and did observe that. There is one for 19.99 that looks like it will fit.(its on order as of 2.00am last night). If I wasn't taking the kids out for the weekend I would pop over to compusa and see what they had. I am then back for 1/2 day Monday before flying away on a business trip. It will be waiting for me when I get home the following Sunday.

We are up at Erie... Splash Lagoon. Free internet in the lobby at the hotel.... Park opens in 45min. Kids are changing.....

Had that same issue with the 24 pin connector, had me boggled for a bit then I found the clip that took the extra 4 pin side off Smiley

Gotta love Dell...  OMG did I say that?

Never again will I buy a Dell system, going to build a Frankenstien for the next one Smiley
