Title: Is the glass covering the playing field Tempered Glass?? Post by: Amachanic on July 20, 2012, 02:42:46 PM I'm looking to buy an older Gottlieb Pinball machine from the early 1960's and I thought they used standard sheet glass but I had someone say it's tempered? I've seen them break before and don't remember it breaking into a thousand little pieces.

I have had many of them made in the past.

Post by: Amachanic on July 20, 2012, 09:09:31 PM My local hardware store can custom cut me a piece of sheet glass for about $23.00 but they don't do tempered glass. I called a large glass company and they wanted twice as much for the sheet glass, and tempered was $75 :25- and would take 7 days :103- .. So for right now the older Gottlieb pin is on hold. I have a call into someone who works on older EM pins to see if he has a good used piece of glass.

Only use tempered glass for the pinball machines. Plate glass when broken will be like a razor and HAS KILLED. Had a store owner here who had a broken store front window. He replaced it with plate glass because it was cheaper. A kid bouncing a basketball broke the new window and got sliced by the sharp pieces. He bleed out and died before they could get him to the hospital. The way the steel ball sometimes hits the top glass can cause it to shatter into sharp razor shards with plate glass. Only use tempered glass. Although it cost more it's three times stronger and will not produce sharp shards of glass when broken. Title: Re: Is the glass covering the playing field Tempered Glass?? Not just for the safety factor, but the first time the ball hits non-tempered glass, it will most likely shatter. I was just stunned by Henderson Glass prices and the time to get the glass in.. I will stick to tempered glass.. Thanks for the advice..
