Jan 5 2014.......I need help in this area. Recently acquired 2 1998 IGT S+ non-working slots out of a storage unit. One of them is up & going ( new old stock mpu, battery, ram clear, etc )..................the 2nd one is giving me trouble. 1998 Hot Peppers, 3 coin, quarter, sp731, ss4710.........installed new old stock MPU, new battery.....insert mpu with clear chip and I get the dong like I should...displays 0 in winner paid & played......hit the spin button, but it does not do the 259, 999 countdown cycle. replaced the spin button micro switch as precaustion, no change..........tried different things -  pulled mpu, put sp731 back in, it does the 4949, 6   6 , flash several times and throws 61 code, hitting white test button does nothing, closing door turning reset key does nothing........replaced sp731 chip with known good, replaced mother board with known good, unplugged door main door optic, No Change...it will stay stuck on 61......if I try ram clear again it dongs, shows 0, but hitting spin does nothing...I do not see any bent pins.....I am learning as I go so please no technical mumbo jumbo, be very specific and very basic.....Thanks

You have an advantage since you have a working machine to swap parts with in order to isolate the problem. The MPU works fine in the working machine? Forget about the Clear chip for the time being. It is overused and is not needed nearly as much as people think.

Personally, I would swap the MPU boards (leave the game and reel proms in their respected boards), and verify the board from the "problem" machine works in the good machine. You will get a couple of errors, since the board will be "new" to your working machine, but those are easily remedied (by use of the jackpot reset key, NOT a clear chip). After we have verified the MPU is good, we can move forward from there.





EDIT: Revised post after re-reading to not confuse anyone after I seen he never got to a 61-1....

Thanks CVslots......just switched mpu's...........inserted known good mpu from my 5X into nonworking Hot peppers..........threw code 61, pressed white test til cleared out, closed door, reels have spun, no more error codes and it plays aok...............................took the peppers mpu, inserted in working 5X, throws code 61 and CAN NOT clear past it.....so the problem has followed the mpu, should I start switching out chips now?

I would install the 5x chips into the suspect board to see if the suspect board is any good 1st. and this into the Pepper machine.
( we already know the Pepper cabinet/machine is okay because the 5x board works in it.)

If it gets past [61-1] then the problem is the Pepper chips.
If it doesn't work with the 5x chips, then the problem is the board.

Next, you change one chip at a time to see if it's the SP or SS chip with the problem.

I'm assuming both boards are 10Mhz boards? They both have a volume knob on top?

both boards do have volume knob.......prior to reading yer post I put pepper mpu back in pepper machine with a diiferent sp chip - no change. The new old stock board came with a cmos chip in it.....out of curiosity I took it out and put cmos chip from original mpu in.......the code has now moved to 61_2 but I can not get past it ........white test switch does nothing, close door turn reset does nothing.............when you say install 5x chips into suspect board, which chips? ( game, reel, cmos and more?)

When you got to [61-2], all you needed to do was press the test button in and hold it for a few seconds?
Did you try that?

oh...you did...ok if you held the button in for a few seconds.
Otherwise, if you just pressed it momentarily, it wouldn't clear and advance.

BTW...only turn the Reset key when in [61] codes while the door is closed otherwise all you will do is enter the Accounting mode.

On the last questions you have, leave the cmos chip in their prospective boards...there's no need to move them - just move the SP and SS chips, one at a time, onto the suspect MPU.
Then try to get past [61-1] by closing the door and flipping the Reset key once.

okay.....tried both ss & sp chips from working 5x board, one at a time......each change threw error 67, got that cleared, then  error 61, got it changed to 61_1, closed door & reset, reels cycled and unit plays aok with each chip change..................just put peppers board back into unit with its repective chips. again, throws code 61_2, holding test button for 6 or 7 seconds does nothing and doing this multiple times does nothing

[61-2] is a recoverable CMOS error.
When you hold in the test button for s few seconds, it should go to [61-1].

Sounds like your Peppers MPU has a problem.
Chips seem to work in the other MPU board.

PLace a WTB ad in the Classifieds section of NLG, I'm sure someone will have a 10MHz MPU board for sale to ya!  yes

installed the peppers machine into the 5x with same results...................good news is I have 2 more new old stock mpu boards, but will need to solder in new batteries first......I will do that transfer the chips and go from there. Thanks for all the help....APPRECIATE IT !!..... will let know results , probably tomorrow, as I gotta go work in a bit.

I have headache !!.......I have tried 2 more spare boards. These are the older 5700 boards that were casino spares, almostnew....( fyi - original boards out of both my machines were the 5704 )...................Anyway of the 2 last 2 boards one copied board from day earlier (stuck in 61 and cant get past it) ....the very last one set up aok, played aok.............shut down the machine ( had 2 run out for couple hours).......turned it back on when I got home, had error ( cant remember the exact order & #'s now) but it wound up at 65_0 (eeprom device error).................went to take the mpu out and it felt pretty warm to the touch.....looked at it and found couple of resisteors, diodes (or whatever they are) had actually got hot enough to melt the solder and these pieces just dropped off the board. (CR12 & D3) ( trying to attach pics )......scratching head and taking tylenol

Best thing to do is order some new chips and an MPU.
I'll bet your chips fried too.
I hope you're not installing and pulling out the MPU with the power on?

Anyways, place a WTB ad in the Classifieds section for some parts.

Do you have an electronics multimeter at all?
Can you borrow one from a friend?
I think we'd better check some of the power coming out of the power supply box to the motherboard on the floor.
Components should NOT be falling off the MPU circuit board!!

power always off when remove / install mpu.......do have multimeter..........have only used to test batt volts & speaker ohms so will need to be specific on settings etc...lol

You don't need the MPU to be installed to check for voltages coming out of the power supply harness into the motherboard on the floor...all you need to check is on the the pins where the Molex connecter is at!

volt test readings...................with 6th pin ground the left to right readings are   13.30 / 13.30 / 9.10 / 7.67 / 0
                        ....................with 5th pin ground the readings are ...........        13.34 / 13.33 / 9.10 / 7.69 / 0

Those are normal readings!
Something must of blew on that MPU to make circuit components fall off like that!
I'm only guessing when I say that a component overheated somehow and shorted out against another piece.
Before you install another MPU onto that motherboard in the suspect machine,
please check under the motherboard for possible loose change or metal.

Since you already tried a known-good MPU in there previously, I'm going to suggest getting
a new-old stock MPU and newly burned chips.
There's a few guys that can do this for ya around here!
All you gotta do is place a WTB ad in the Classifieds section on NLG.

Just got replacement boards in. Installed and works like champ. I have 2 more older (1994) s+ machines I also picked up. The boards sent are the 5704 but 1 has the volume knob (which is what is in the machines) the other does not. Am I correct that with the volume knob it is 10mhz and without the 16mhz. Do I need to return the 1 without volume knob or can it be used?

The one without the volume knob is a 16 MHz
board and will work with the right game chip.

Generally, the 16MHz MPU board is used for most Barcrest games really.
I think there was some extra programming involved in the chips to interact with the topbox computers.

However, there is a somewhat more readily available SP1019 and SP1272 that is used for "regular" Type 0,1,4,5,12 16MHz games.
A few others that come to mind are the SP1145 and SP1147 chips.

The SP1146 is also a popular chip installed in 16MHz games that need a Type 2 "Haywire" chip.
Don't put you SP731 in the 16MHz MPU board.
It's not designed for it and will only cause reel errors.

However, you certainly can use a 16mhz board for a Type 0 game.  Look in this sticky post to see a list of known SP chips.  Any chip listed there as 16mhz will work with your 16mhz board -- just find one that supports Type 0 games and 16mhz, and you're in business.

Looks like the SP1272 would be the best for a 16MHZ board
and a SS 4710 chip.
A SP 1147 would work too.
