proten.....would the volume then be controlled by the sp1272 in programming?......would it require different clear / set chips than the ones i use for sp731/ss4785 on the triple diamond?

Yes as the 16MHZ board doesn't have external
volume control. On the set and clear I will have
to look at my list to make sure.

SP1272 uses SET088 or the more common SET090
What SET chip do you have now?

no idea on the set #........picked up off ebay with clear chip year or so ago...it just has labels ( ram clear, validator reset), but has worked with everything up to this point but all the game proms have been sp731.............I am wondering about something else.........just starting to experience a lack of volume on one of the 10 mhz boards....adjusting knob does nothing......I will swap with other working machine to make sure its the board.....if it is, can we override volume on 10mhz by using the 1272 chip  and force it to volume programming and if so, would I need to remove the volume dashpot / switch?

no...do NOT stick the SP1272 into a 10MHz board...it is designed solely for the 16MHz MPU's.
All you'll get is weird reel errors.

I'm suspecting that you have a much older SET chip....such as the SET005 or the more common SET015.
I don't think the SET015 will open the menu option for denomination setting tho but you can try it....it won't hurt anything.
The only thing that can happen is that the old set chip will not open the option on the SP1272.

BTW the volume on a 10MHz is controlled by the blue potentiometer knob.
They are built as cheaply as possible and work very intermittenly.
You can turn it just a little and the sound will be blasting loud!
You can try cleaning the metal contacts of the potentiometer knob with some electronics cleaner spray but I doubt it will help very much if any - they are just so old and normally stuck in one place forever.
Rememeber, most of these machines are over 20-30 years old!
also, the old casinos were very loud! lol...we used to use coins a lot before TITO came out.

proten & bunker.....thank you both for the help.......Greatly Appreciated....................I have removed a couple of potentiometers from other old boards and am considering trying them in this good board............printed the sp list and am wondering....................assuming that the higher numbered chips are newer / updated versions.............reckon if there is a 4 digit sp chip that is type o, single line, 25 cent, for the 10mhz board that has volume programmed in the chip so as to eliminate potentiometer altogether?

Only the SP chips for the 16MHz MPU have the option for the volume control built into the chip programming.
