I notice that my power supply for my s+ is starting to develop a hum.

Any guesses on how long she'll last ?

It could mean that a short has developed in the transformer.

S+ power supplies are cheap right?  - $20

Even though I have 4 boards and a ton of parts I still don't want anything to get blown out.

Munch,
If I'd were you, I'd get one before she blows.
Terry,Randy & April at Slot Machines Unlimited had them fairly cheap.
The shipping was good too.

So the hum is a sign of impending death?

I only noticed it when the ballast went on the belly light.    I replaced the ballast, starter and bulb and it all works fine now.

In older pinball machines (20 yrs +) the windings contract and expand (hot &cold) and
if the covering on the wires deteriorate, the wires begin to micro - arc.
The electricity running through the thin little windings starts humming...sort of like the high power electrical tower wires outside.
Only thing though, those wires on the poles are thick as hell - yours inside of an 20 yr old slot machine transformer - aren't.
