Hi,

I need some serious advice as I have now tried everything I could find on the forum for a CMOS Data error on my PE Plus machine. I have replaced the battery, it was low. I replaced the eeprom on the Motherboard. I have replaced the Cmos chip. I have swapped Mainboards but still nothing.

This is what the machine does. It plays fine then after about 2 to 3 hours it comes up with call attendant. It then gives me a Cmos Data Error.

Please help!

This seems to be my day for taking shots in the dark.

It sounds like a heat-related problem. Does the machine work for a time after you've cleared the machine and hence had the door open for a few minutes?

I wonder if it's a power supply problem, since you've already changed the battery and the MPU board (I presume that the replacement board also had a good battery?) and the EEPROM on the motherboard.

When you swapped MPU boards, was the replacement a known good board from a working machine?

Interesting.

About the only thing left is the motherboard itself.  Perhaps there's a component on there that goes bad after it gets warm.  From what you've said, you've only replaced the EEPROM on the motherboard -- not tried a different motherboard.  That's about all I can think of.

I replaced the motherboard this morning and still no luck. If it is a heating problem how would I go about cooling it down and if I need to replace something, what would it be?

When we say motherboard we are talking about the fixed board on the bottom of the machine and not the removeable MPU board.

The CMOS data error is caused by the TWO cmos chips getting out of sync. Once chip is on the MPU board, the other is soldered on the fixed motherboard.
The CMOS chips do have a life to them of xxx number of writes / rewrites. It is possible the chip is just worn out. Easy enough to change out the motherboard rather than trying to replace the chip.

I had a similar problem with my S+ but it turned out to be a token stuck under the motherboard that shorted evey so often.

Hi, Thanks for all the replies. I am still out of ideas after trying everything mentioned. The only thing I seem to have found (Maybe!!!!???) is the 220V to 110V transformer that overheats, bu would that be causing this?

To be clear, have you replaced the motherboard that is fixed in the back of the machine and typically would not be removed from the machine?
