Title: Bally 5000 plus slot machine needs help!!
Post by: threex5x7 on March 25, 2013, 09:24:58 PM
Hello everyone and thanks in advance!

I just bought a Bally 5000 plus slot machine from eBay Germany tonight and I'm pretty happy with it.

There is a fault though.....

When I turn the machine on the florescent lights come on and that's it.

I have checked the three fuses below the MPU boards, all is good there.

I removed the old memory battery (was completely dead) and have a temporary wired in a  3V lithium battery with no luck either.

The two LED's on the MPU do not flicker, flash, or otherwise power on when the machine is turned on.

Pressing the Reset buttons on the MPU did nothing.

The attached photo of the slot machine is the way it sits powered on.  No LCD displays or fault codes.

Any thoughts or ideas?

Did you check your voltages at the power supply?  These 5000+ machines are noted for their poor power supplys.

Ron

PS:  Thanks for the eMail.  I'm sure it will help.

UPDATE 1:

First and foremost thank you very much for the reply and support from proten and theprocat!  :244- :244-

I opened up the power supply and found a significant amount of corrsion on the boards (see photos).

I am now in the market for a power supply.....any suggestions?  I would prefer to change the entire assembly out, not just the area where the corrosion is......

There is a sticker in the front of the power supply that reads:  AS-2982-11  (Part number I think....  :103- ).

Now that I'm committed to this machine....anybody know where a reasonable priced keypad is?

Thanks again!!
Bobby

Bobby,

lucky slots [azgamingslots@msn.com]  has an after market power supply that replaces yours.  I had similar corrosion on my unit.  I believe that little board is the power safe monitor.  Anyway, I desoldered it, cleaned and reinstalled.  All voltages were then correct, but I am going to change it to the newer replacement.

I was able to find a programmer on Ebay.  Kind of expensive (100 dollars), but I guess when you work on these old machines you need the tools.

Bobby,

How are you doing with your 5000+ ?

After doing a safe ram clear many many times, repairing the infamous "Black Box" power supply, checking voltages on all pc boards, cleaning everywhere, testing the optos on reel circuit boards, and finding that the ribbon cable between the I/O board and the reel control board was on backwards, my 5000+ now has a pulse and lives.

The strange thing is that the ribbon cable fits better the wrong way.  Bally used a socket on the I/O board that isn't keyed, so it is easy to push connector on the wrong way.

Super.  Power supplies seem to be the biggest bad boy.  Glad to hear another 5000+ is going.   :244-

Final Update:

SUCCESS!!!!

Again thanks for all the info and input.  It has all worked out for the best......

I followed theprocat's advices and orderd a replacement power supply from LUCKY SLOTS  [azgamingslots@msn.com].

After several emails, the team at LUCKY SLOTS got me in the right direction.

Two takeaways here:
1.  If you have a Bally 5000 Plus spend the money on a keypad......best $25 bucks I ever spent.  You will want that keypad after you swap your power supply!
2.  When the need arises in the future I will look forward to working with LUCKY SLOTS.

Thanks again!!!!
Time for a cold one and some slots!!!!!!!

Super, another 5000+ going.  I have seven machines and like the 5000+ the best.  I have been gathering spare parts for mine, so if you need anything in the future, let me know and maybe I can help.   :244-

Hi guys, I am new to American slot machines but I also have a 5000+ now. I really like the machine and read something about this keypad. Can you tell me more about it and is it possible to tweak/update software?

Thanks in advance,

The keypad allows you to enter different parameters for the machine.  You can find one on Ebay once in a while.
