Title: My new Garfield topper is alive!
Post by: MrBellMan on May 24, 2009, 03:41:07 AM
Hi all,

I just wanted to show the picture of my new Garfield topper :31- :31- :31-

It's not for an IGT, but I figured out the wiring and with a simple 12V adapter, I got it all to light up. No chasing LEDs though. I will have to find or make a small circuit to get that effect.

Not sure if I will put on top of a game or hang on the wall, but it looks really nice in a dark room.

Big thanks to Buzz for the hookup!  :131-

Rob

I gotta get me a topper.
I need to get mine up and running.  I have two in the house and 7 in the shed, not sure how good the ones in the shed are though.  I think I'm hooked on toppers more than slot machines.  Is that bad??

Dan    they tell me they are all Garfield but I'm going to look real good next time I can get down there.  Hay don't ask a dumb ass truck driver what machines thier suppose to go on. If I was smart I woulden't own a slot machine.  Sigma   humm  Sigma   kind of sounds like something you would need a penicillin shot to get rid of.    :103- :99-   Buzz

Dan, Looks like they came off of these.
I know Garfield is licensed by Mikohn, now Progressive Gaming.
Didn't they put these in Sigma machines?

Title: Re: My new Garfield topper is alive!
Post by: tacman on May 24, 2009, 10:02:21 PM
Yes, according to all the info, Mikohn developed these video slots and then distributed them through Sigma. The newer titles like Wayne's KISS machine seem to be a little more elusive than the more common titles like Battleship, Game of Life, Yahtzee, etc.

Two things I noticed, MrBellMan is the plastic Garfield molded in a raised and not flat plastic, looks kind of 3D in your last pic. Also uniman posted those pics on the Sigma video bank and it seems different leds and amounts of leds are lit on the chasers, are we sure there is no resident motion board in these? If too much voltage is applied would it overdrive the motion board and just keep them lit steady?

 Dan (tacman)

Title: Re: My new Garfield topper is alive!
Post by: MrBellMan on May 25, 2009, 12:08:59 AM
In my diagnostics last night I found three different wires that would light three different sets of LEDs, so there is no built in chaser. A circuit will have to be used to fire the voltage to the different wires at a different time. I actually got the lights to chase last night by moving a power wire over the three leads separately. Of course it was only done by hand, but they did chase!   :5-

The Garfield figure is molded in a 3D kind of way and not a flat plastic. There is also an LED light board behind it that lights Garfield up. There is no florescent light, just LEDs.

Thanks,

Rob

Probably a good bet Buzz. But in his post he was just asking for a value quote, probably intending to sell it all the time. Would be nice to offer to NLG members first, but after seeing tabasco oval INSERTS going for $80 on Ebay, I can understand. I wouldn't even bother with that garish item unless I had the machine to put it on to complete it, but to each his own.

I ran across those and the Pink Panther one is pretty cool. :89- :89-  There is an S&H green stamp on there now too:

I think it's a challenge to find toppers, :89- almost as much as a challenge to find the machine I want to buy when I want to buy one. :47-  That Las Vegas one would be MOST EXCELLENT :131- to own but I have a feeling it's going to shoot up at the last minute. :37- :8- :37- :8-

I have to agree. Played green stamps last year in Laughlin. YUCK!!!!

I saw this statement on the site www.openvegas.com   ;

"Talking to friends who just got back from Vegas - they told us they saw scam artists hanging around the S&H Green Stamp slot machines in 3 different casinos.(NYNY, Bellagio and Wynn)

Some of you know how these slots work better than me. I guess you have stamp books on the screen,, and you earn stamps to fill the books. When you get a full book, you can "trade it in" for free spins.

If you stop playing with a partially full book, you forfeit the credits associated with the partially filled book.

My friends saw 'helpful" individuals - targetting players at these games in the following way:

"Do you know how to play this? Its really fun!" They encouraged the player to bet more an more. When the game got to the point of having a book almost full, they would then encourage the player to give up and "cash out their credits" - the game's not paying off.

When the player left, the scammer then sat down and with very few additional credits was able to fill the book of stamps and play the free spins.

I know sometimes you come across a machine with some books with stamps in them.
And I know none of YOU would ever take a stranger's advice on playing a slot.

But have you seen this happen?

Our friends also mentioned they did not see the Green Stamps machines in any of the Harrahs properties this visit, and wondered if they were removed because of this problem."

There's still a few floating around a Harrah's here and there. Most of the Harrah's removed them because nobody played them, replacing them with more times than not, hot shots

Bally had a series of machines called City Scapes, such as Chicago, Seattle, Niagara, New York, and Las Vegas as well as others.  I would think the Las Vegas topper would go on a Las Vegas machine

Thanks,

Some of those city scape themes had huge jackpots, like 40,000 credits for 2 coins bet. I saw a lady hit it twice within just a few hours one night.

There's a new version of S&H Green Stamps out there now -- S&H Green Stamps Deluxe.

I love the campy 50's theme, plus the banking feature is what makes it valuable.  I've never even come close to the scamming that uniman posted about, but when I see an empty machine I'll see how many stamps are completed.  I once found a machine that someone had walked away from that had a full book plus half of the next book completed.  I put in a $5 bill, filled the second book, took the free spins, and cashed out at $95 for a $90 profit.

Yeah -- it's more than likely going to go on the wall of my game room rather than on a machine (unless more machines start magically appearing!).  Thanks for the heads-up, though.

I usually just bid what I'm willing to pay, and let "The Force" decide wether or not I'll own it.  Yes that's a Star Wars (not Star Trek Bunker) idea.  I will look into Jay's method though, thanks Jay. Anyone using different software?

Thanks,

I use Bidnapper when needed and it works very well. I've gotten good at bidding manually within the last 10 seconds of an auction, so I don't use it as often as I used to, but I still rely on it for important auctions where there is heavy competition (like the Star Trek items that itsawraphollywood.com sold), and when I might not be online at the conclusion of the auction. I usually set it to bid 2 or 3 seconds before the end of the auction.

They offer two purchase models. You can buy a block of time with unlimited bids, or buy a block of bids with unlimited time. I use the latter since I don't use the service that often.

An advantage of bidding this way is that you can decide the true maximum that you're willing to pay well in advance, with a cool head. You can also cancel your bid as long as there are six minutes or more left since you haven't actually bid anything on fleapay.

In addition, since you haven't bid, you won't be telegraphing your intentions to other bidders, and by bidding at the last second, you deprive newbies or other non-savvy bidders from driving the price up trying to figure out what you bid or trying to top it.

Yet another advantage is that you can set up contingency bids. For example, there might be three of the same item up for sale and you might want to have a chance at all three without the risk of winning more than one.

What do you use to put a snipe bid in?

I've been using eSnipe (http://www.esnipe.com/) forever.  From what Stat posted about Bidnapper, it sounds to be pretty much the same deal.  Their fees are very low, and you only pay them if you win your auction.

Knagl, that's a good point that I had forgotten to mention. Bidnapper also deducts only winning bids from one's bid balance, and it only applies to those who purchase blocks of bids, not those who purchase blocks of time.

<ADD> The main difference that I see between the two is that esnipe charges one percent of the winning bid, with minimums and maximums ranging from $0.25 - $10.00 per snipe. Bidnapper's cost per snipe is fixed and currently ranges from 36.99 for 25 snipes ($1.48 each) to $19.99 for 10 ($2.00 each).

Bidnapper also offers time blocks. The best value is an account that automatically renews annually for $49.99 per year. The cost per snipe depends on how often you use the account since there is no limit to the number that can be used in the 12 month period. They sell time blocks as short as one month.

Based on this information, esnipe would make sense for people bidding infrequently on items averaging less that $150. For those using the snipes for more expensive items averaging over $150 or those who snipe frequently, Bidnapper would be the better choice.

Of course, one could always buy a block of bids on Bidnapper and sign up on esnipe, and then use esnipe for the cheap items and Bidnapper for the expensive ones.

I have used MaxBid Timer II with good results.
They have a free version where you can use it as long as you like.
The only restriction is you can only snipe one bid at a time.
with the full version you can snipe multiple auctions.

Based on this information, esnipe would make sense for people bidding infrequently on items averaging less that $150.

That's my profile.  For the rare big-ticket item that I bid on, I ususally just set a reminder on my phone to alert me an hour before the auction ends, and then I bid manually near the end.  For the most part, though, I buy trinkets (and toppers!) on eBay -- nothing for hundreds of dollars.

I'll look at the sniper programs.

Anyone have a Super Spin Sizzling 7 or a regular Sizzling 7 topper for sale or trade? Please?  :96-

Sizzling 7, now you're talking my language.  That has always been my "lucky " machine, I even bought the one I used to play at the casino near me.  I still have it.  I also have a couple super spins, but they will be sellers.

Thanks,

I figured that I had better buy it or it would keep costing me more and more.  I actually won several times on it, it was popular so I didn't always get to play it when I was there.  Hey, did you see the slants I posted?  I have them in another "showroom", not my basement.  I'm sure they are heavier than the S-Plus slants.

Thanks,

I'm under the impression that it's probably just plexi with LEDs that shine up from its edge to light it.  It should look cool, though.  Can't wait to actually get it.

Buzz,
The phone chargers don't put out a lot of amps,
so with that in mind, I'm not sure if they would work.
But they won't hurt either, because not enough amperage doesn't burn out anything - it just doesn't light up...
It doesn't hurt to try as long as the VOLTAGE  is correct...okay?

That's what it is, with the word Jeopardy etched into the plexi to "catch" the light. The sign will probably look best under low ambient light. :71- :71-

I didn't do it  :72- I just bid on the one topper and got it.

Which one did you get?

I got the Star Wars one.  My brother is a fan of Star Wars and Star Trek.  I think this'll look good up with the games.  I SO wanted that Jeopardy topper though.  I just got notice my topper is being shipped USPS which means my lazy-@ss mail man or even the mail woman might actually have to get out of their vehicle to bring me mail.   :72-

So now a question about these Garfield toppers.  I bought a POS thing at Salvation Army the other day because I wanted the transformer on it for this topper.  What I wanted to know is this - does he transformer have to be a 12vdc or can it be 12 vac??

My friend sent me a pic of the way the wires are supposed to be and he said something about adding a resister to dim the border lights a bit.  This Garfield topper is much different than the old toppers I have here that are direct wired with 110 power.  I finally got two of them up and running with the twinkling border lights and all.  I was thinking of checking to see if the 'guts' can be taken out of one of them toppers and put in Garfield to make the border lights twinkle.  By twinkle I mean chase of course.  :97-

It wasn't my pic to distribute, so I asked if I could upload it here and he said yes, so here it is.  He says 12vdc but he was going to check to see if it worked with 12vac too since that's the transformer I have.  I haven't tried this yet and he says that the border lights are very bright so he put a resister in line and said that it cut the power down to those lights so they aren't so bright.  This is what he said "and one more thing the chase light is very very bright (amber) like a led flash light..lol i put an 8ohm 5watt resister in line!! dim out a little_-20%

Buzz,

Would one of these 12v regulated power supplies that output 12vdc work to power the unit  ?  I am just wondering how many amps and watts should be on the power supply ? And also, how you get all of the wires attached to one positive or negative output on the power supply ?  Obviously, electronics has not been a forte of mine...

I finally got around to wiring my  :31- and getting him up on the wall.  Now I don't know how many people live in earthquake country or on a  :104- out in the swelling seas but I found this bracket at Lowe's and it does a great job of holding  :31- in place.  Pics attached.  :89- Maybe you will like it maybe you won't but thought I would share anyway.  Gotta love the leveling device they give you but I did realize that  :31- is lower on one side than the other so putting the bracket on  :31- was as easy as raising the right side until it was level.  While I was at it I got another one of my toppers cleaned up and running too.  It's Yahtzee.  Today was topper day  :97- :97-

Enforcer, I'm not Buzz but thought I would chime in anyway.  :88-  I looked at that link you posted and I would think that would be too big.  I went to Salvation army and bought a used transformer for $1.27 and cut the end off it.  It originally went to a phone charger or something.  I would also think you could get away with something like this:

http://cgi.ebay.com/DC-Power-12-Volt-3Amp-Adapter-LCD-Monitor-for-HP-3A-12V_W0QQitemZ130307229925QQcmdZViewItemQQptZAU_Electronics_Batteries_Chargers?hash=item1e56ea88e5&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=65%3A12%7C66%3A2%7C39%3A1%7C72%3A1205%7C240%3A1318%7C301%3A1%7C293%3A1%7C294%3A50 (http://cgi.ebay.com/DC-Power-12-Volt-3Amp-Adapter-LCD-Monitor-for-HP-3A-12V_W0QQitemZ130307229925QQcmdZViewItemQQptZAU_Electronics_Batteries_Chargers?hash=item1e56ea88e5&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=65%3A12%7C66%3A2%7C39%3A1%7C72%3A1205%7C240%3A1318%7C301%3A1%7C293%3A1%7C294%3A50)

Som is the guy that took the picture that I posted and he said he checked the amps on it and said that you can get away with 3 amps.  I think mine is 1.5 amps tough.  I don't run any of my machines for too long, maybe a couple hours, so this topper wouldn't be on long either.  I figure if it burns out then I'll just replace it with another one.

Railroad94, I got all my information from Som.  From what I understand there was a bigger amp draw on the 12vdc but the lighting was better on dc.  I didn't notice anything bad on the 12vac power that I am using,  I thought the lights looked fine.  I hope you get your  :31- up and running.  Oh wait,  :31- does run for anything but lasagna.  :97- :97-  Remember to show us all a pic.  :96-

I measured it yesterday and it is roughly 21 inches across by 21 inches high (including the candle) or roughly 16 iches for just  :31- without the candle.  Here is my game room right now.  I have to share it with the washer, dryer, extra fridge and freezer but still all worth it.

Enforcer, I didn't know how detailed you wanted me to get so I got as detailed as I could.  There are a few pictures I will be uploading.  I hope you can read it all.

All connected.

And on a side note, you shouldn't have to take your :31- apart.  I had to because I had it all wired already and I had already made a plastic bracket to cover the whole on the bottom.

Lemme know if you need more help and I'll try to help more.

Enforcer, So I can take it you got your :31-  all wired up and running now?  That'll be awesome to hear.  What I didn't show you was putting on some kind of on/off switch because I haven't put it on yet.  Heck, I haven't even bought it yet.  :25-  Since I do use remote controls to turn my slot machines on and off I haven't bothered but the other  :31- I bought has to have one on it because I am sending it to my sister for her birthday.

Anyway, if you get a chance and can do it, I'd love to see your topper all lit up.

Ron

PS - Thanks for the Karma boost and Kudo's.

Well, I will have to leverage what I learned from you for a couple of more toppers that I just picked up off of ebay - three toppers were picked up for $99 total....I'm a Rodney fan and the SNL topper with Dana Carvey (a/k/a "the church lady")  on it seemed like a good conversation piece as well.  Two of the three seem to have chasers.

I don't think I will get them either at this point - checked seller's feedback and he has two negatives (from a small number of overall transactions) for not making delivery on auctions.  Seller must be a big  :52- :52-
Didn't see that before placing bid, but i figured I was safe, since paypal was supposedly covering the entire purchase price, but when I went to pay on paypal it said seller was not set up to accept paypal.  Smells very fishy....

Even more fishy is that ebay lists his contact information as Illinois, but the phone number for his account is in Vegas.  You call the cell phone and it goes right to voicemail with no name given.  Funny thing, although his ebay contact information lists his name, when you google his phone number there is a recent craigslist ad in Vegas for a guy with a different name who is buying gold and jewelry, cash paid on the spot.  If he really is the name listed under ebay, I  have his parents name and address in Skokie, IL.  I can always call them and ask all about their son  :97-

:81- OK it occurs to me that there has to be a simple way to make Garfields border chase like it should :103- so I took the insert off one of my Sigma toppers I have that is pre-wired for all this stuff. :89-  Inside is a chaser controller and doing some research online, the company that makes these controllers is in California so is a product made in the USA. :131- :131-  I like that idea.

Anyway, I just sent the company an email asking them if they still make these controllers and how much they cost.  I am including a couple of pictures so ya'all can see what I am talking about.  It works great for the Sigma toppers.  Maybe I'll buy another Garfield topper from Buzz and try this out on a topper.  My brother likes his border lights on all the time so hooking it up on that one isn't an option, at least until I can show him how nice it'll look with the chaser lights  :97-

Anyway, on to the pictures.  :96-

Whew!
I've been inside toppers like that.... :8-
everything is dry and brittle from all the heat it took when the fluorescents were on 24x7.
Be careful if moving anything in there because the wire covering will crack and split...
exposing bare wiring and possibly causing shorting out problems in the very near future...

ashyron,

Got the Garfield Topper all wired up.  Lights up fine.  The only thing I noticed was that the transformer, after an hour, gets so bloody hot, it is almost too hot to the touch to take out of the outlet.  I don't want to cause a fire and all.  Any ideas ? Its a 13.5 volts DC and 1 amp rated transformer...

Thanks,

enforcer    Look at Sommer's reply #94 in this thread  ( page 5 )  I hope someone jumps in and sets me straight but why can't the 12 volts be supplied by the slot machine itself ? truth of the matter is I haven't checked a S plus to see if it has 12 volts anywhere. maybe I should put brain in gear before mouth ( fingers )  in motion   :103- :103-

The straight story about voltage & current for Garfield toppers. I took a look at the boards and found that they were meant to run on 12 volts DC. I lit up every light on mine, & measured the current draw. It measured 1.1 amps @ 12vdc. I found that the candle lamps are incandesce lamps and are current hogs. With both lit up they drew over .3 amps. I replaced them with 2 color changing Leds that I got from Zone Auto. My candle now slowly drifts through every color of the rainbow. Its kind of gaudy, but I like gaudy. After I changed the lamps in the candle the total current draw was .710 amps. I’m waiting for the flasher module & 12volt switching wall wart power supply that I have ordered from Hong Kong. If you have an honest 1 amp power supply your in fat city. Not all power supplies deliver the voltage & current that they have printed on them. It’s easy to tell if your transformer is over rated. When you plug it in and the voltage drops below 12 volts and it gets hot, that a sure fire way to tell that your power supply is over rated. If you leave it plugged in it will try to deliver voltage until it melts down.
#1 Use only 12 Volts DC #2 Get a power supply that will delver 1amp @ 12 volts DC
If you don’t follow these two rules, don’t whine when something melts down.

Thanks for that Buzz. :131-  I was just going to refer enforcer over to Sommers reply on the tests he done.  I just followed his recommendations for the wiring.

I have been reading up on all this and have gotten tons of advise and what I have come up with is these LED lights are to be run on DC power only and if you have it on AC they will eventually wear out from the wrong current.  Maybe not now, maybe not tomorrow, but soon..... and for the rest of your life.  Oh sorry, darn movie quotes that pop into my head. :30- :30-

So what I am thinking of doing is giving Buzz's idea a try and trying to wire it direct from the slot machine as long as I can find some DC power in there.  And suggestions where there is DC power in an s2000?

In the top box do you have the extra board in the back?  Gives you multiple plugins for  13vdc,25vdc and netplex hardware.  You can also look on the back wall behind the BV and you should find a power plug for the backlit reel controller and if not used you can grab that.

Hello All
I bought this switching power supply off eBay. It's rated @ over twice what I need, so hopefully it will deliver a solid 12 volts DC @ 1 amp with out over heating. It's rated @ 2 amps & if i only put a 1 amp load on it, it should deliver a solid 12 volts dc & just be loafing along.

I got my 6 output led switcher from Hong Kong. I was sad to discover that it had only 2 channels, and it's not going to work to well for 3 channel chase lights. I have one of the RBG 3 channel switcher with RC on the way. That one should work great for the chase lights on Garfield. When i get it I'll give all an update.

I imagine it's still 2-channel.  That seller is selling a lot of emergency/police-type lights which would flash back and forth, so the 2-channel thing makes sense, regardless of the number of outputs.

Som, great job.  I contacted the company that makes those controllers and they are $34.00 bucks each plus shipping.  Did you make a video so I can see what it looks like with the chasing lights?  Did you get rid of the rest of the topper??

That's awesome.  I kind of knew that chaser would work, and I love what you did with the candle too.  What is that star you made?? I want one, LOL just kidding.  Chip still likes his topper with all the lights on, isn't ready to have them chase yet.  I can't believe the company that makes them controllers wants $34 bucks each for them.  They have one for $30 bucks that is made more for the LED's but even still I think that's allot of money.  Still, nice job.

Sommer that looks great. Being able to control the speed of the chaser is a nice touch. The next step would be to tie the chase speed to a machine and have it speed up when credits are being paid out for a win.  :79- :71-

Or have it chase faster during a spin.......
or go from chasing to just flashing during a spin......

We made light organs in electronics class that could likely me worked into a slot to react with the sounds of the machine.  I'd have to dig through my memory for that though.

Thanks,

Those are the standard IGT oval S2000 toppers.  Just apply power to the wires leading to the LEDs and they cycle on their own -- it's not programmable or changable by the end user.

Yup, Kevin got it.. he knows everything... it's just a circuit board with some LED's on it. That video didn't turn out near as shaky as I thought it would since I was standing in an office chair, now that I think about it, things could have went terribly wrong.

I bought that topper about 4 years ago, got it and looked at it for about 4 days and put it back in the box and tossed it in the garage and forgot about it. Never would have found it unless I was looking for some packing tape the other day.

I got this one from Renee Pafundi awhile ago, I haven't seen anything at all in her ebay store latley, I had to make my own harness tho' only drawback and they won't fit an S+ without some extra help from external power supplies , 24V for the flour. 12V for the LEDs

Yup, Kevin got it.. he knows everything...

I try telling people that but nobody believes me.   :72-

Just send them here Kevin, we'll tell them and they'll have to believe us, they'll have no choice.

Hello All
RBG controllers come in 2 flavors, Common Anode (+ LEADS TOGETHER) or Common Cathode (- leads together). The Garfield toppers use Common Anode all of the pos. leads tied together. I received my RBG controller from Hong Kong & you guessed it it's common cathode. I ordered the correct controller & when it arrives I'll give you all an Update.

Hello All
Garfield lives. The controller that i got from Hong Kong works well. It allows me to adjust the brightness & speed of the chase lights. The lamp rod i got at the hardware store allowed me to attach Garfield to the top of my machine. The 12vdc 2amp power supply that I used is just loafing along. I measured the current draw for the finished product & It's less than .7 amps. This is what worked for me, Good Luck with yours.

Holy craps!
I didn't know that there was a cabinet that big behind the Garfield sign...!
Usually, toppers only have about 4 to 6 inches of a box behind the screen...
everything (wiring, ballasts) is usually tight as heck to get at to work on.

Looks like it's made for 110 Volts switching. Bad Idea! Unless your into accidental electrocution.

(400W for each channel at 110V.
Separation of high and low voltage to prevent accidental electrocution.)

I don't know if it'll work but if you get that particular one, you're going to have to solder everything onto the board.
Those kits come with a whole bag of resistors, and various components that you have to figure out what is what and put it together...
I bought some kind of kit like that and it's still sitting on my desk in the bag....lol
I had no time to decipher and assemble it...

2Moons, thanks for posting the pictures of your GM and Garfield.  :3-
Could you possibly take a closeup picture of the new LCD monitor without using flash? I'd love to get a good look at it. :71-

I ran into a couple of problems #1 the screen shots exceed the maximun attachment size allowed. #2 The photos do not do justice to the LCD display. In the photos the focus appears a little soft & the color saturation a little low. In the real world the focus is sharp a tack & the color saturation is rich and full.

If you would like to see the photos that i took, send me a email address & I'll attach them and head them back to you.
Have a good one 2Moons

This is one of the nicest little toppers I've ever worked on...
Everything is crammed like into a sardine can in there!
I stuck it on top of my Bally 5500 Wild Rose 2CM for testing...
very, very colorful...the  picture does not do it any justice...
