Title: IGT S+ / PE+ - USB to DCS Interface
Post by: TZtech on March 07, 2011, 05:22:45 PM
Hello All

Since Andy's App and USB to Serial converter with the FTDI chipset seems to be working nicely for I-Games I decided to do an interface for the S+/PE+ DCS Port.
Some research on the FTDI site and off I went to get one of these from my local electronics shops
http://apple.clickandbuild.com/cnb/shop/ftdichip?productID=71&op=catalogue-product_info-null&prodCategoryID=104 (http://apple.clickandbuild.com/cnb/shop/ftdichip?productID=71&op=catalogue-product_info-null&prodCategoryID=104)

This interface talks at 5V TTL level which is what the DCS port wants- Added a butchered harness from another system and we have liftoff.

NB - There are timing issues with the app that Andy is aware of and working on so results may vary.

Could you please post the wiring connections?  I already have a MAX232 chip and board, I just need the connections.  Thanks in advance.

I detest USB for commercial applications, but over the years I insist if it must be done then I will only support FTDI chipsets!

They are the same as the S+ just different J numbers.

The PE+ DCS port looks like it is J8 or J6 cant read the number on the PDF I have.
IT is a 2x5 (10 pins) connector,
Same pin numbers even though IGT tried to confuse it by moving numbers around in the drawings.

The other port that you use for +VB and the power ground is J12 same pin numbers

Unless they changed something on the PE+ you need connect both grounds together.

Poppo stated that the 74HC04 or 74HC14 is not needed but your mileage may vary.

All

Just to clarify - This little board converts USB directly to TTL voltage levels. All that is needed extra is wiring and the DCS port connector.
If you have a serial port and want to use the RS232 Poppo and foster have built working boards and posted their schematics

Andy

I see on the FTDI website that they provide a D2XX dll that allows you to acess the FTDI chipsets directly. Dont know if the timing issues can be more easily resolved going this route but it will mean being locked in to FTDI devices (My results have been positive and they are easy to source here) - http://www.ftdichip.com/Drivers/D2XX.htm
