Title: unable to identify video poker machine
Post by: bikerman on September 05, 2009, 07:28:24 PM
I have a probably a stupid question but here goes. I have not been able to identify the video poker machine that I have. I was having problems with it blowing fuses and now I have changed the caps and two different voltage regulators and have stopped the fuses from blowing. I do get card images on the screen but can not reset it. I am wondering if the eproms and wiped out. Is there a way to check and also is there a way to get them programed with knowing the manufacture of the machine?

Post a picture and I bet someone can identify it.

I think it may be a Electrosport.

Is there a way to tell if the eproms are any good? or is there some where I can get them reprogramed?

What an interesting pay table! Aces or better, but an 8/10 flush/FH. I can see I'm going to be occupied tonight working out the percentage.

It's obviously a truck-stop style machine from some southern state, the kind of place that has cherry masters. I saw something like it once in New Orleans. I can't identify it from the pictures, but perhaps I could from a large close-up of the main board.

Op-Bell, I came up with 90.73% with optimal play (not perfect play. i.e., without using specific discard values in decision making.)

There is no payout for a Royal, so I used the straight flush payout of 50 for 1, or 250 coins for a max bet Royal. My friend's Fortune I has no Royal payout, so it's not unheard of with older machines.

<PS> If I add in a normal Royal payout of 250/4000, I end up with a payout of 91.03%/92.18%.

How do these numbers compare with what you got?

I just got the same result.

It is a long board. Here is a pic of the monitor when I plug it in, and that is all it does

is there a way to have the eproms checked or reprogramed?

Probably. What are they - 2732? They will be about 30 years old so they may be getting tired. The spec back then was they would hold the program for at least 10 years, but it turned out they last much longer.

I can not be even sure if that is th problem, I am looking to see of there is a way to reset the machine. All I get is what is in the picture, not sure if there is another problem on the board or not.

I believe there's a problem on the board. I see no character generator EPROM, so everything on the screen must have come out of the EPROMs top right and been put there by the processor. I suspect the problem is around the screen memory (probably the two large black chips lower left of center). I'm just guessing, though it's an informed guess because I know how boards of that vintage were generally designed.

is there any way to replace those or how can I check them or get the programmed if they need it. I am kinda new to this, but I am learning a lot

also the coin switches don't do anything, very low voltages on them.

Only an expert can trouble-shoot that board; it may be a bad chip, or maybe just a bad solder joint. I can only remark on what I would check first, and the most encouraging thing I can say is there's probably only one small thing wrong. You have a stable screen, with one complete card on it and some junk, but all the junk is real images, not random bits that you would see if the RAM was defective. Sounds like an addressing problem. There will be two ways of getting an address to the RAM, one from the CPU to write the data, and one from the chain of counters running the display that reads it out. The counters can be presumed to be ok, since the display is stable. The CPU and EPROMs and the data bus can be presumed to be ok, from the complete 2 of Hearts on the screen. So I would turn my attention to the address multiplexers, which are probably 74157s, though I can't make out any part numbers in the picture. Do you always get the same screen when it powers up, or does it change?

Very low voltages on the coin switches - is the 5V supply ok? Check across one of the capacitors in the column on the left.

Yes it is always the same picture when powered up, I have changed all the caps on the board except for the two gold ones. there is a light bulb socket above the coin mech. that didn't have a bulb in it. If i check the two leads to the socket together i get like 56 v, so of course it blows the bulbs. If i check them to ground I get 4.0v and nothing on the other. where do i need to look for the numbers? i can take a closer pic.

Just checked the voltage from the com to the n/o and i get 5v dc.

The two larger chips to the left have the folling numbers : M3-7641-5, and under that is 7938

I've worked on these before got a few of them from West Virginia but, that was a few years back. The problem could be many things but, you can reset the board if you short the battery out with a piece of wire for 5 to 10 seconds. I doubt that will fix that problem though.
