If it aint broke why mess with it?????

« on: February 21, 2009, 12:08:07 PM »

I have a couple of vision mpu boards that are dead.  I replaced the inverter with a known good one and the screen now lights up using a jumper on JP1 but I get nothing on the screen.  Both boards look perfect with no burn spots.  I'm assuming there is a common component on these boards that just fails after so many years of use.  It's not the LCd since I tested the lcd in another working machine and they are fine.  Any techs out there know if this is a common problem and what the component is that would cause this?

Hmm, that's basically a PC motherboard. Is there any connection for a speaker that could signal POST codes? Usually something that will cause a no boot issue is display or memory related and the code would be output to the speaker in that case.

By the way, where is JP1 located?

JP1 is located behind the memory sticks near the fan.  If you put a jumper on it you can watch it boot up just like a laptop. Try is and you will see what I mean.  I get nothing.

Question: I just jumped mine, and the LCD screen goes white then black when it initially powers up. Does yours do that?

Nope, just white forever.  No black, no messages.

Whatever it is, then, should be pretty basic, as the motherboard isn't even trying to control the display. I'd start working the Vcc circuit (most likely 5v). Looks like the +12 is ok since the inverter powers up. I assume the little fan powers up also.

I'd start at J4 pin 4 That's where Vcc comes in.

Fan works fine so it's getting 12 v.  The inverter runs on 5v as I recall.

Hmm. Most of them I've seen use 12v for power, and could be 3.3 or 5 for signaling. There are a few that use 5v power though, mostly on small applications..

Thanks for the "Heads Up" on the JP-1 jumper. Helped me with the Mata-Hari. Might install the jumper on the rest of my Visions...
