Title: Neo Geo AES sound issue
Post by: ArtificialEnemy on October 03, 2013, 03:51:25 AM
Hi recently bought a NEO GEO AES but it has a sound issue. BGM and sound effects work perfectly. But whenever voice is played I hear popping and cracking and the voice is inaudible. This happens on all games i have tried (6 in total). I have taken the cover off of the Neo Geo AES and looked at the main board but cannot see anything visually wrong.  What are my possible next steps. I would even be fine sending it to someone for repair if anybody knows of a repairman.

FM sounds are working but sound samples are not?

Check the traces between the YM2610 and the slots. You seem to have a problem between the sound ROM(s) on the cart and the YM2610, or a bad YM2610.

Not sure about the samples vs fm sounds but during league bowling when the character talks and says oh my gosh all I hear is popping cracking noises. I hear the ball sfx and bgm. I will try and work on the board in the next few days. If I have a bad trace I might be able to repair it but if the chip is bad I'm not sure I will be able to fix that. I will let you know what I find. Thanks for the help.

fm sounds are typicaly melodies and "synthesizer" type sounds.  Samples are recordings, like voices and the ball hitting the pins.

So I actually hear the ball hitting the pins too. But I will check the traces tonight. And would I check the slot connector to the trace nearest to the ym chip. Not having the board in front of me I can't remember where the traces start from the cartridge slot. Are the traces underneath the cartridge slot or next to the slot.

In the earlier games like those, the ball hitting the pins was synthesized and not an actual recording.  Voices, can be synthesized, but they sound weird.  I agree with channelmaniac's theory that there's something wrong with the DAC circuitry or path.

Ok so I tried to test the traces but I don't really know what I'm doing. Anybody know of somebody that fixes Neo Geo Aes systems. I'm willing to send it in for repair. I don't want to mess the board up and kill my neo geo.

I can, but I'm backed up on work and have a waiting list that is a few months deep.
