Title: Adhesive tape removal from reel strips
Post by: MrBellMan on March 21, 2010, 01:36:32 AM
I received a set of non-backlit (S+) reel strips today and one of the strips has a piece of old scotch tape on it that I can not seem to get off. It is old and will not peel off as I was hoping.

Does anyone have a way to get this off without damaging the reel strip?

I use "Goo Gone" and that works quite well for the tape on the back of the reel strips.  If the tape on the front as pictured is old and brittle you might have to let it soak for a little bit, and carefully scrape it off with a razor blade.  Slow, easy, and carefully is the best way of getting it off without damaging the strips!

First test the strip to insure it is not the non-washable kind.  If it's okay then pick up some GOO-GONE and apply in light amounts starting at a corner and using an Xacto to get it up.  DO NOT use "Goof Off", it is way too invasive.  Goo-Gone is more mild and as long as you do not leave it on for too long it should be fine.

With that said...this is from my own experiences...no warranty is expressed or implied  :200-

Yeah, but I haven't heard of "Goof off" so thanks for the warning on that!

Here's what Goof Off looks like....now it is awesome for taking the gunk off the laminate from adhesives and plaques.  But it is very invasive....and even though I don't do it...you should wear rubber gloves.  Often after I use it ....a few layers of skin on your fingers come right off as well.

I will try the Goo-Gone and report back! Thanks for the info.

Give it a little time to soak into the tape before trying to remove it.

I just got through doing this and Goo Gone is the right choice for the job with properly laminated S-plus strips (washable strips).

My only suggestion is to use your fingernail to remove the tape once you've soaked it a bit with the cleaner. Do not use a razor blade. I find that my nail is more than strong enough to get the job done with almost no risk of damaging the strip. A soft cloth with Goo Gone on it will clean off any gummy residue left over once the tape is removed.

Also try a little WD-40 on a soft cloth.
