Title: 2000 D.O.A.
Post by: FORDSBS on May 30, 2011, 12:41:14 AM
Hi all. I have an S2000. Has been working fine. Turned on all I had was florescent lights, Bill acceptor light & all lights on MPU  & topper
lights flashing real fast. Did some checking so changed power supply. Turned on and all came on & started to boot up. I turned to go to
computer to start looking for power supply when it made one hell of a noise, ALL went dead & that dam burnt smell. Now she's
totally dead. I guess I fried this Power supply also. Any advice where I should start looking for problem ?
Hope to get @ it tomorrow night. Trying get info before I start.
Thanks in advance for any help.

Ford, have you done any changes/alterations to the machine lately? Anything at all in the last couple weeks before it happened? All your cooling fans working ok?

Didn't make any changes & cooling fan was working. I've been using this for about 6 Mo.

Have you pulled the MPU to check for signs of damage? Like what Bunker just had, look at all the chips for obvious signs of damage. Next would be to look at peripheral boards like the meter board and I/O boards for the same thing, check for exposed/shorted wires, that type of thing. Finally, unplug tenet plugs and reinstall one at a time till game won't boot. Just some ideas, but it'll help narrow things down

Thanks cowboy. After it took a crap I didn't do any more. I thought I'd pick you guys brain until I get back @ it tomorrow night.
That is good advice you have. I guess first thing should do is pull power supply & put in another machine & see if it burned out.

Definately check that Ford, just don't put that MPH in anything else till you know it's safe  :89- Or any of the peripheral boards for that matter. There sure have been a lot of member S2000s taking a crap lately. Self destruct signal from the mother ship maybe? :72- :72-

No, probably the age of the machine. Most machines are 2000 to 2007 so they would be 4 to 11 years old now. I don't know what the MTBF (Mean Time Between Failures) would be for the PS but some hit it , some crap out way before. Mine went in that way about a month ago but it was a much older version made in 2000 so 11 years later, it left................... I wonder if a computer power supply could be used but it probably does not have the required voltages.

I agree with you Reho...
Most of these power supply units were on 24/7 on 'live" floors in casinos at one time.
They are hobbling at best and way past into their golden age years now.  :96-
Though many PS's can be re-built via re-capping and bring new life into them -
many homeowners lack the know-how to perform this.

The Randy Fromm video posted up in another similar thread
has some very good clues how to do this though... :89-
It would be better if he had someone to hold the video camera for him though..lol
I don't know if he's ever heard of a tripod?  :96-
Robert Sult's notes on Power Supplies are very good too... :89-
Many board schematics are included as well.

I was going to do that for the one that I have but it is a really early version and does not have that board in the middle. I could re-cap but that may not do it. I did not see any caps on my board that were "bulged" or that had deformities. But hey, maybe I will just go for it. But a regulator may be out, etc. I also do not have the plug for a test (120V) like Randy has in the video, I guess there is a part # for that plug?

I don't know the part number for that Molex but I think he's only using 3 wires (+/-/Gnd) .
Should I come up with a Molex/pins part numbers -  will post it here.

What kind of fuse does the power supply take. Can't see any # on it & there is paper over it so you can't see inside.
I know it's blown. So it would not screw it up I put a 1.5 amp & it popped. Has to be a short somewhere.

I'm going to take EVERYTHING apart go over all.
I put a 3 amp fuse in Power Supply. Hooked up without cover so I could see what happened.
About 6 or 8 places on board sparks flew until fuse blew. There is a dead short somewhere.

ooh...that's NOT good fordsbs.
Time to shop for another one.
Is it an Autec power supply like in Randy Fromm's video?
I had mine apart last weekend and checked out that "white" fuse.
( It was good)
I wish I would have seen what it was rated for... :279- :25-

Ford   The link I posted #7   If you test your Power Supply that way and it smokes a little bit, you will know it's junk. If it passes the test the short has to be in the machine and you will smoke a new PS.     I think I have this correct ??    :103- :103-

:284- I found another power supply. I'm going to strip everything out of machine & see if I can find problem before I put in another PS & it.

Thanks to Raz410.  :285-
Raz got me fixed up with these parts.
I hope I have what I need. Going to strip out wire's & change all & go from there.
All I have to do is remember where the wires go.
I think I will learn something here.

wow! You even have the harnesses that goes up to the topbox hole! Cool!!!  :133-
Most of these guys only pull out the boards and scrap all the hard-to-get harnesses!
I've seen other guys that only own a pair of pliers.... :60-
Raz is really a very good vendor - I've gotten some parts & kits from him I'm very happy with!  :89-
I really like the way he uses bubble wrap as opposed to those bloody styrofoam peanuts!!!!

Run a key chip in it to set the denom.

Title: Re: 2000 D.O.A.
Post by: Buzz on June 04, 2011, 04:28:30 PM
I'm not sure. but if coin denom is unknown I would think you will have to do a key and set it to something.

Haven forbid you do a clear. you will see a smoke cloud clear from Virginia to your house.   :79- :79- :79- :208-

It does not  seemed to mater i have tried both ways i set mine  to wamm i have tried ipc  it still works

Title: Re: 2000 D.O.A.
Post by: cowboygames on June 04, 2011, 05:15:32 PM
Don't mess with WAMM setup. Just accounting denom, player denom(if it's a multi denom game), game selection(payback%  for each denom), printer enable(if you use one) and sas validation(should be set to standard). If you want to tokenized, you can set token value in here too

After I close door it says it was not set, have to chose.
