Have a beginners question with a new battery install on my machine. Presently is soldered onto board. Have changed it twice within the past month. But the second battery I had on my work bench for about 6 months, so some of the life was gone anyway. Question-- If I install a remote 4-slot AA battery holder, and extend wiring, I will be adding a diode in one slot and the other three will give me 4.5 volts. Original battery I think is 3.6 volts. Will the difference in volts do any harm to motherboard? Is bigger better or not. Will I lose any voltage going through diode? Just learning! Appreciate any help! Jim!

Your board will work with a solid 3.0 volts (I use 3.0 batts in a pinch) but you have a bigger problem, you shouldnt need to change batterys that often anyway.  If you go to radioshack they sell battery packs for cordless phones in the 3.6 volt.  After it runs down you can re-charge but depending on the machine it is in you will probably have to clear the board.

When I got my 5500 the battery was dead. It had a Lithium battery in it so I replaced it with a CR2032 button battery and it has been good to go since then (1+ year).

Thanks for the replys, guys. I think I'm going to stay with a remote battery holder in case of battery corrosion. Jim

The first time out, the short answer is yes. However, you can replace the soldered-in battery with a multi-battery holder so that you can either keep one battery in place while changing the other, or just leave the game on while changing the batteries. (To do this you mount the battery holder outside the board cage so it doesn't have to be opened.) Both solutions will prevent having to clear the machine the next time this happens. And it will happen on the Bally ProSlots... again & again... arrow  banghead

OK,
I've got my battery set up ready ( Thanks ) and I have the set chips, So my next question is where do I find the clear procedures? I've done an S+ and a S2000 but I have no experience with the Bally's. Scratch Head

It depends on the mains (chips) that you have on your board. Older mains use a jumper on the board to clear the machine, newer mains require that clear chips be used. You posted that you have set chips (did you mean clear chips?). Does that mean that you know that you have a machine that needs the chips?

S5500 SafeRAM Clear Procedure
For a Complete, Full, or Partial SafeRAM Clear,
turn the machine power OFF. Unlock and remove the MPU
Assembly. Remove the Main EPROMs from U12 and U15
and replace them with the corresponding Clear Chips.
Upon ensuring that the MPU Assembly is firmly seated
into the Backplane Board, turn the machine power ON
while depressing the appropriate buttons.
Complete - Press and hold the PSEUDO COIN and
TEST buttons, then switch power ON. When the message
CH C displays in WIN PAID, release the PSEUDO COIN and
TEST buttons. The CH C message is followed by CL C.
Full - Press and hold the PSEUDO COIN button, then
switch power ON. When the message CH F appears in
WIN PAID, release the PSEUDO COIN button. The CH F
message is followed by CL F.
Partial - Switch power ON. The message CH P
displays in WIN PAID. The CH P message is followed by
CL P.
If an error was detected during SafeRAM™ Clear
as designated by E C, E F, E P in WIN PAID, repeat the
operation.
Upon a successful SafeRAM Clear, the button and
tower lamps flash. Switch power OFF and replace the
SafeRam Clear EPROMs with the corresponding
Mains. Replace MPU Assembly and switch machine
power ON. The machine will enter a Reel Calibration
procedure whereby the home position is recorded in
SafeRAM™. For tilt-free operation it is important that the
procedure completes without interruption.

Note: If Market Code = 12, the MPU
TEST button is inactive. A second
keyswitch provides TEST functions

Real Time Clock (RTC)
If MC=08, an opportunity to change the time and
date setting occurs after a complete SafeRAM Clear.
Set the date using the SPIN button to increment the number
in the flashing field (mm/dd/yy/dayof the week) and the
BET MAX button to move to the next field. Set the time (hh/
mm/ss) using the same method as the date. Press CHANGE
to confirm changes and exit.

I hope this helps,

Good luck,
Wayne

Look at the chips in U3, U4, U12, & U15. If they are dated 1995 or earlier, then you don't need the clear chips.

The procedure is the same as in a69mopar's post, except that instead of swapping chips, you close the jumper JW-10.

JW-10 is located at the lower right of the board as you pull it out of the cage. It's close to the front wall of the aluminum frame, between the frame and the very large chip U71.

Close the jumper.
Reinsert the board.
Power up as directed in the post above.
Perform the clear.
Power down.
Pull the board and open the jumper.
Reinsert the board, power up the machine and play.

This brings up a good question.
Can you swap mains around?
If you have old, can you install newer mains? or vice versa?
Would older mains be preferred or what would be the difference?

You can swap mains but would need the appropriate Saferam Clear chips. If you have older mains, you wont need them obviously.  Some mains have different options, but for the most part it's up to you.

Thanks,

Thanks very much, there are many helpful people here, we all started with help from someone.  I have been busy shopping some machines lately so it's great that others are so helpful too.

Thanks to all,

Thanks Wayne,
Do you know what those other options are that are on the newer mains? Anything to change that stupid reel spin sounds?
or make it more entertaining?

K+ for the info you have been giving.
It seems their is a limited amount of information about these machines.
