Very common with Bally 5500s. Try hitting the reset button one or several times (let it reset and drop a coin in with the door closed to test after each reset). Also try turning the machine off and on again.  Try turning the coin-mech switch off and on again. Maybe go into the setup menu and exit. Somewhere in all of that, the thing will start working again. I've never figured out why they stop taking coins, or just what exactly starts them working again Scratch Head, but it happens on all of the Bally ProSlots that I've seen..  Duh!

Bally's: SHEESH!  hissy fit

<>If someone has a specific short list of how to get the machine to take coins again that always works, please post. yes

It's possible that you have an issue with your coin mech, but it's really common for 5500's to just stop taking coins for no apparent reason as I described above. If you've tried the resets and power cycles, then you'll need to check the coin mech and harness.

Make sure that the coin mech toggle switch (located on the front of the MPU board frame next to the test button) is turned on or the coin mech won't have power. Turn on the machine and leave the door open. After it finishes its power up routine, pull out the main door cherry switch. This will trick the machine into thinking that the door is closed. The "50" code in the winner paid window should go away and the comparitor's green light should come on when you simulate the door closed condition. You can also drop coins through the coin head at this point to observe what happens.

ITALIANO      If you just keep dropping coins in, does sometimes one register?  In looking at your pic. the $ sign next to MAX Bet Button kind of makes you think it might have been a Dollar machine and needs the lower optics shimmed.  I never had a comparitor that worked sometimes and sometimes didn't work. I would have to take the quarter out of the comparator and re-seat it.     It would work for weeks then start dropping coins - I re-seat the quarter and it would work again.  Now that the comparator is in a 6000 I haven't had to do this.

Give it a try -

Joey sells plastic CUT cards... these are the colored plastic cards that dealers use in black jack to mark the cut. They work perfect for this job.
You can also use playing cards but you will only get 1 or 2 uses out of them.

Jay   Doesn't every one use credit cards for everything?  I even use them to scrape ice off of a windshield in the winter.  If it breaks they will gladly send a replacement no charge!! Buzz

I have a stash of phony credit cards that I received in mail offers. I only kept the ones that were full thickness and made as well as the real ones. I keep them inserted in the player tracking card slots on my machines so they're always at hand.

Just as you say Stat, player tracking cards would work.  Or you can get a cash can remover which was designed for that.
