I get a reverse coin error 24 on my machine and therefor I can't get the Coin Comparitor to turn on. Here are the steps I've done.
1. I did a complete system RAM clear and everything cleared fine.
2. Replaced the Coin Comparitor
3. Pulled out the optics board below and cleaned optics. Plugged back in the optics board and yellow light was on.
4. Made sure the Coin payout switch was in the upper position.
5. Coin Comparitor light still does not come on.
6. Quarter slides back into the tray and not the hopper
7. Machine still has error code 24.

Attached are some pictures. I'm wondering what this lead is in the door if that has to do with anything.

In top pic. I don't see a sample coin installed in the comparator. The LED light should be lit on the CC, but who is to say the LED bulb is any good.

I had put a sample coin in there after the picture. I have 2 coin comparitors and both of them the LED light is not lit. So I'm sure it's not that. Thank you. Any other ideas?

I checked that out. However, the comparitor's green LED light isn't even lighting. Could it be the optics board is bad and therefor isn't supplying power to the comparitor?

The LED on the comparitor will only light up when the door switch is activated.

The connector you point out is not used on my machine either.

I can't find it in my search, but one of the experts on here mentioned a reverse coin can also happen when the coin goes thru the comparitor or the optics channel and the coin bounces off a guide as it passes thru, this bounce will be detected as a reverse coin.

Has this machine been converted from $1 to quarter?

You can clear the error code and then when you drop a coin in the error returns?

It's been a long time since I did anything with a Bally 5500, but let's see how much I've forgotten.

The links in reply #4 are all wrong, 5500 does not use a CC 62 D comparator , you should have a CC 16 D 24 volt comp. In your picture 288 it looks like the comparator you have is a CC 160, 48 ( sorry I have no idea what machine it's for )  As for as the LED I'm 99% sure the LED will lite with the door open on a Bally 5500 ( this is not true on a IGT S+ )

Now are you sure you have a reverse coin error or the last time the machine paid out it was for 24 credits ?? Take a look at the coin optic board and you will see a very small white button. With the door open press this button a few times and then press the spin button. If the reels spun and played a game you don't have a error. If the reels did spin lets do one more unrecommended test, on the back side of the comparator with a folded piece of paper block the rake OPEN, put it back in the machine and see if the coin is accepted as a good coin when it goes through the optics. A word of caution here, with the rake blocked open any and all coins will go to the hopper, a mix of different coins in the hopper will cause you all kinds of problems on hopper pay out.

Bottom line I think you have the wrong comparator or even a bad comparator. Oh and on a Bally 5500 the comparator does not get it's power from the coin optics and a comparator can not produce a error on this machine. The comparator is independent of every thing else and all it does is read a coin and directs the good coin to the optics/hopper and a bad coin to the tray.

Where is the white button on the optic board? The coin compartitor I used was a replacement as I thought perhaps this was the issue. I've posted the original unit now.

The Coin optics are right below this comparator. green board and the small white button is just about dead center on the board.

I found the small white button. If the error code reads 2.4 the white button has no effect. If I turn the power off and then on while holding in the white button, I get a credit and can spin the wheels. However, as soon as I close the door I get the error code again. In the manual it talks about jumper selections. Is it possible one of them is in the wrong setting?

So the error is there as soon as you close the door and no coin has been inserted?

You are using a Dollar comparitor and dollar coins?

With the door open and if you push in the button that is to the right of the reels mounted on the inside of the cabinet, does the LED light up on the comparitor?

Dennoman   Do this, the comparator you have in picture 308 , on the backside of it the only moving part is the rake, lift the rake up and put something between the rake arm and the comparator to hold it open. ( I use a folded piece of paper ) With the rake open and a sample coin installed, put the comparator back in the machine. Close the door and drop a coin in. Now tell us if it worked or not.

Went into the hopper since I put something between the rake. However, no credits were given and it still shows a 24 error. The other thing going on is the bill acceptor runs constantly unless I stick a bill in. It will take the bill in halfway and just stop and do nothing. But at least it's not running. I've replaced the bill acceptor because the other one did the same and I thought it was a defective part.

Have you done another RAM clear? Have you gone through your menu and checked all your settings?

If it is reverse coin error, then maybe the coin optics board has failed.

DIP switch jw3 set properly according to manual and coin being used? See page 2-10.
Machine options set properly ? See page 2-12
Machine option 10 is for denomination.

Which display is the error code being displayed? "Win Paid" or in the "Credit" display?

Can you post a pic of the displays showing the error?

Would the yellow light still be lit if the optics board has failed? Here is a pic of the error code.

Clay do a complete ram clear I see there is a coin reverse code 24 on machine

Correct code 24, good eye. what does that mean? (coin reverse?)
I did a RAM clear before and it didn't help. but i'm open for any sugguestion.
thanks!

coins should pass through the comparitor then through the optics, if the machine senses that a coin goes in the reverse direction, it produces the error code.  This was in order to eliminate "stringing" where people tied string to a coin in order to cheat.

I have had a machine that would come up with the 24 error and it was the coin optic board.

Thanks so much for the post with the Links. I've read those previously and have tried the tricks they mentioned. Long story short the Coin Compatitor is still not receiving power and turning on and therefore I'm getting a 24 error for some reason. Does the bill validator running constantly effect things too? Where can I get a new optics board?
