I don't think the comparator he had would cause any errors -- it simply accepts a coin (passes it through one slot -- let's call it path "A"), or rejects the coin (diverts it to another slot -- path "B") based on whether or not the inserted coin matches the sample coin.  It doesn't tell the machine that a coin has passed through.  In fact, the only signal it should get from the machine is, "ready to accept a coin" and "not ready", and this model shouldn't even talk back to the machine.

In the "not ready" state, every coin is rejected (path "B").  In the "ready" state, coins that match the sample are accepted and travel down path "A" to the optics.  It's the optics that tell the machine that a valid coin has been inserted and that the machine should issue credit.

I'd defer to Wayne's Bally expertise, but I strongly suspect that his optics may be the issue, and strongly suspect that his original comparator is just fine.

Kevin  we agree, that's why I'm including a complete optic set.  I will even make you a small bet, I bet the only thing wrong with his optics is, shimmed to wide or dirty. maybe both.

Oh I forgot I don't know anything about slot machines.  I call that the Basset Hound Syndrome, just go around acting like a dumb st*t and nothing is ever expected of you, I had a Basset Hound like that, she was dumb like a fox. A coule of members on NLG's come to mind. I got my two picked out, you pick your own  !!!!!!!!!!!

I have experienced coin in errors in a Bally 5500 from low/fluctuating voltages from the power supply.
He did say he had another machine. You could try swapping power supplies from the good machine and see if that corrects the issue.

Just a suggestion as this solved a coin in error for me.

swapping the optic board will most likely cure the problem.  As Buzz said, it could just be dirty.
