Title: GK CRT touch screen doesn't work when door is closed - only when open.
Post by: speedbump on July 19, 2013, 02:33:07 AM
I have an older Game King with a CRT screen- don't know the model but it was manufactured in 2000.  The other day I put it on a dolly and moved it from one room to another.

After moving it, I noticed the CRT touch screen function did not work or only occasionally worked.  I could change denominations and games with the buttons, but doing it by touch didn't work 95% of the time.

I opened the door and did the screen reset (touch the dots and wait for the beep).  Strangely, it took a while but everything reset and the machine played fine with the door open and the service buttons pulled out.  However, when I closed the door, the touch screen function went out again.  Door open - touch screen works fine.  Door shut - touch screen doesn't work or is intermittent.

Clearly, the closed door is affecting something.  Any thoughts on what I need to do to fix this?

Check to make sure that the monitor is seated properly and that the door/bezel isn't putting any excess pressure on the screen when it's closed.  If the door is putting pressure on one or more points on the edge of the touchscreen, it can cause it to not respond properly.  With the power off I'd consider removing (at least partway) and re-seating the monitor, ensuring it's shoved as far back in the machine as it can go.

Make sure that the new outlet that it's plugged into is grounded properly, and that your power cord includes a ground prong (don't use a cheater plug).

Finally, calibrate the screen with the door closed so that you're calibrating it in the condition it will be typically used in.  You should be able to access the calibration menu from the attendant menu -- with the door closed, just keep turning the jackpot reset key until it prompts you to touch the screen to set the calibration points.

thats the trouble the bezel foam or bezel itself is hitting touch screen -making it act as if it were being touched already common problem . see if bezel is screwed tight to door or however its attached and "no loose foam is contacting screen . if you really have a hard time figuring out where its contacting ??

take vaseline and put a thin coat around bezel close door lightly -then open door "notice" where the most contact transfer is . then of course solve problem and clean off vaseline with 50/50 mix of isopropyl alcohol on all touch screens not "amonia" based products like windex etc -Amonia based products  eat up  the double sided tape adhesive & black tape sealant around display  LCD or monitor CRT   up that holds many screens on other than the ones that are expoxied on at factory .

I did some further exploring after I posted my initial message. It seems the issue is not the door after all.  Instead, I suspect a ground problem.

If I stand independent of the GK and touch the screen, nothing works.  However, if I touch the GK door frame with one hand and touch the screen with the other, the touch screen function works, even with the door closed.

When the door was open, I had to hold it open with my hand, thus creating the connection making the touch screen function work.  When it was closed I had no contact with the machine other than to touch the screen, suggesting a ground issue.

Thoughts?

Yes read all my post on pot of gold touch screens + a month ago on touch screens and operator and machine need to be grounded backed up by Casino tech Kforeman a few yrs ago. But one member does not understand the "Therory" of grounding. His method was standing on a chair or use rubber boots.   I sure would not want to bank on 10,000 volts under a rubber matt + rubber boots standing on a chair to prove something.  He would be dead.

I discovered the extension cord I was using had the ground plug missing.  Changed it and the problem went away.  Thanks guys.

On another issue, I just acquired a GK 6.2 with a flat LCD screen.  It runs great except that the top and bottom of the screen are cut off by the mask on the door when I close it.  I have looked at the control panel on the top of the LCD screen but can't figure out how to either compress the top and botom or shrink the whole screen.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
