Title: igt players edge blank screen
Post by: cheapsalmon on November 28, 2012, 11:58:58 AM
hi everyone. i plugged my players edge in the other day because i had not played on it in ages and i was bored. i got the message that battery low so i bought a new 3.6v 1/2aa battery and soldered it in the right way round. when i plugged the motherboard back in, the monitor did not light up at all but after messing around with the fuses and potentionometers on top of the monitor now all i get is like a grey screen. is there a chance that something on the motherboard is or is it more likely that a wire/plug/whatever is loose somewhere? i soldered the old battery back on and the same thing happens. any advice would be much appreciated. thank you in advance

Check the pins on the MPU board for any bent or broken pins where the board plugs into the motherboard.

hi and thank you for the reply. i have checked the pins, spent 4 hours messing about with all the connectors. how do i know i have not fried the motherboard somehow? when i pull the bottom 120v fuse the monitor switches off. when i pull out the middle fuse there is no noticable difference. should there be? is there some way of getting hold of some schematics for this thing? if i cant get it working, i am considering getting an lcd monitor in there and turning it into a mame players edge plus. i would prefer to get this thing going again but am slowly losing patience. when i power up, the screen is sometimes a light grey color, sometimes purple or blue. once after messing around with the connectors i plugged it in and there was white noise coming from the speaker and a grey screen but i switched it off and on again and that was the end of the noise. none of the buttons light up on powerup either.i have pressed the reset button on the motherboard holder, shorted the service key switch and nothing. any advice/ suggestions/ideas would be much appreciated. thank you for reading this and have a great day.

Looking past the possibility you've possibly damaged it further messing around with it turned on it sounds, from your description,, like you aren't getting any video from the MPU. I'd try pulling the board and reseating all the chips in case it got some oxidation on leg connections while not in use.

thanks for the tip. will try that a bit later when i have more time and my patience returns. the last thing i tried was pulling the connector from the transformer to the motherboard (there is another post on here where the guy had the same symptoms as me)and plugging it in. there seems to be no difference if the connector is plugged in or not. without some more help or schematics my hands are tied. hopefully someone on here will take pity on me and shed some light on the subject!

If you have a multimeter you could check the transformer in and outs for voltage. And try to NEVER plug or unplug anything with the machine turned on. Sure way to add problems to the list...

i thought of that but i have no idea what the voltages are meant to be anyway, and apart from that the mainboard is coverd by a metal plate and there is no way of getting any test leads in there unless i take the plate off and power up the machine. i dont want to do this and will wait hopefully someoneone here who knows the players edge will save me.
