Title: Help, Just got my game king home and I can't get it to initialize
Post by: Rusty775 on October 26, 2013, 10:16:29 PM
New to the forms here, so if I'm posting in the wrong place/not following protocol - just holler at me!! So.....I just bought a brand new, fully refurbished slant top IGT game king 044 today and I cannot get it to initialize.  :208- It gets through the "starting up, please wait", then when it gets to "Initializing the system, please wait..." it just sits there and nothing happens. We pulled out all the boards and made sure that everything was seated well. The funny thing is, on the showroom floor, it worked great. When I got it home .... it won't work. Anyone got any ideas? (I have attached a picture).

Try re-seating the boards again AND the SIMMS on the board. Make sure that the chips are also well seated.

Make sure that the DBV and ticket printer are also in place and properly connected. Look for anything that might have been jarred loose during transport.
Check the door switch (probably not, but...) and make sure the doors are fully closed.

Thanks for the reply! I pulled all the boards, attempted to re-seat everything again, checked the validator and the printer ... still nothing. Anything else I'm missing?

Reseat the bill collector and make sure the door is firmly closed.....

And any switches that may have just had tape on them etc.  Easy fix here i would think.  You did say 044 platform.

My first question would be... How long are you waiting for the game to  load ?   May take 3 to 6 minutes...yes, minutes !  Just walk away from it... Be patient.

Also,  are the "dots"  after the wording "Please Wait".... moving... ... ...  . .. ... (that's a good thing if they are)

The game should eventually come up, even with BV issues / doors open  /  closed.

Since you have an  044  format / flashed board,  you only have one piggy-back flashed board.   The only other thing I can think of is  low battery... the game may even still show up with that  "issue"  in a black rectangular screen.

Good Luck.

Yes, 044. I re-seated the bill collector again, made sure the door was closed, and I don't see any wires loose, taped, hanging, etc. I did press the "menu self test" button on the board while powering up the machine, and that brought up the "authentication menu" underneath which said, "Local authentication" and "external authentication", but I was not able to do anything at this menu (screen is touch, and I couldn't touch anything on the screen, and none of the buttons worked). The tech at the place where I got it from said that he thinks it is a problem with the board or the eprom chip and wants us to bring the board and chip back to him. However, that is 2 hours away and I would like to fix it if at all possible. I just wonder if it is possible for it to be working when we picked it up, and then not working when we get it home if it was due to a problem on the board or chip? Seems like that would have been realized (it was working great at the shop).

cp: We have restarted it multiple times and waited up to 40 minutes for it to load, no dice there. The dots are NOT moving after the words please wait (they are stationary on the screen). He replaced the battery on the board before giving it to us (even wrote the date of replacement on it: 10/20/13).

I don't know if this is relevant, but on the bill validator, there is a blue ambulance that blinks constantly. I really appreciate all of the help you guys are giving me!

On all given info,  This may be a board issue as 044 flash boards esp. it seems and some others are "fragile"-that being said-static elec.-walking across carpet etc. and touching the board etc will fry it.  Looks like for some reason it would need to be cleared and re-booted and set up.  As others mentioned you should have got more on screen than you did.  Bv -ambulance blinking is because it is not on line-(net-plexed).  Did you hear bv cycle on pwr up?. Since you cannot axcess anything at this point not much you can do but triple chk. all connections, switches, etc.  Not much help but just a thought. Turning in for night here but if it is a problem you did not create the seller will prob. gladly take care of it. --

Hi Rusty 775,

 :238-

Sorry to hear it's not working.  That's very disappointing, especially after driving a couple of hours both ways.  It would seem logical that transporting the machine that distance would jar something loose in the machine.  If the machine was then plugged in before everything was securely seated, I suppose it's possible it could have damaged the boards that the seller wants you to bring back.

Here is something that happened to me once (not 044 but 3902, so similar).  I brought a machine home and had all kinds of problems even after re-seating everything.  As it turned out, the CPU chip was loose.  Surprised me because I couldn't imagine that one ever being loose.  But, I pushed on the CPU chip (the larger square one on the MPU that pulls out with the 044 board on it) and sure enough, it popped back in place tightly.  All problems went away after that.

May be a shot in the dark, but thought I'd pass along just in case.  It sounds like you know this already ... make sure the machine is off before pulling any boards.  That can damage boards/chips instantly.

Best of luck to you!
:Dave :88-

You might be having a power issue.  First check to make sure power supply is seated tightly.  If it is then disconnect all light ballast. Remove BV, unplug printer.  If it completes start up you can start reconnecting things one at a time to isolate the problem.

Hello Rusty  :238-

As posted by other members above all good suggestions
on what your problem might be.

You might also want to check for bent pins on the mpu
make sure all the gold pins are nice and straight.
Having one bent pin and it won't boot correctly

Those slant tops are a little more tricky when sliding in the mpu
take your time and never slam it into place.

As stated by another member those game/flash boards are very sensitive to static discharge
you must take great care when handling those boards.

Tim

They are a bear to move!! I'm trying to decide if I'm just going to bring him the boards, or bring the entire machine (which is MUCH more of a process). I'm just afraid that if I don't bring the entire machine, and it turns out that the boards are ok, I'll have to come back home and drag the entire machine up there again. I love the slant tops (that's what I always play at the casino), however now I'm kinda wishing I would have bought an upright .... oh well!

OK OK OK......
My opinion.......
STOP....take a breath.....walk away from it for a little while.
Head to computer and download a PDF on the whole machine....
It worked not long ago......so it can work again.....
It got manhandled/bounced/moved around.....
It was off,box was closed...Static is not the problem.....
SOMETHING got bounced loose, it's a connector SOMEWHERE.
You could yank the boards, add more variables, introduce some new trouble....
Or get real familiar with this machine, go thru it....start at power supply....
Then chassis wiring, then backplane, then interconnect....
If still not working, inspect CPU shelf for loose items....
BE PATIENT!! they do take time to "Boot up"...
TAKE PICTURES before you unplug stuff! Then unplug things, inspect with a bright light and reassemble it.
I would bet you dinner that it is a MECHANICAL upset than a ELECTRONIC failure.
Be VERY glad it is not a SGI "Oddessy" machine :)

Well, we finally have a working machine! We ended up taking the boards back to him and sure enough, there was a problem with the main board (go figure). He gave us a new board, and in fact, he felt so bad about us having to come back he gave us all sorts of parts (all new boards, power supply, etc) so that if we still couldn't get it to work, we had all new parts to interchange. I wanted to thank everyone on the board for their help, this is a great community and I'm excited to be a part of it!

Hi all, I have the same error.

@Rusty775: Did the seller explain you what was wrong with the board? I don't have any spare boards to swap.

Regards
Peter
