What I have done is remove the hopper, coin tray, award glass, and belly glass if possible, fluorescent bulbs,  and even the MPU. Removing all of those make it lighter to begin with anyway. Then I lay it on it's back on top of a furniture blanket and optionally cover it with another one.  When you get it to the destination, inspect it carefully for any loose coins that may have been in the bottom and have now found a new home ready to short something out.

Federal law states a machine can be transported from legal point A to legal point B without problems. If you get stopped, as long as your drivers license shows you live in a legal state then there should be no problem. Wouldn't hurt to have a bill of sale from the legal state where you bought it either. As far as laying it down, they travel fine that way, just make sure there's nothing loose inside that could bounce around and break something. I haul them that way all the time.

Is it easy to remove the glass?

It depends on the machine. On a IGT like S+, the award glass is easy once you just pop out the tracking bar cover (if it has one). It just lifts out. The belly glass will probably require some tools. A set of small nut drivers would be handy. It's not absolutely necessary to remove the glass, but 1000 miles could be a lot of bumps.

If it's a video machine, remove the monitor and place it face down on a moving blanket (or three). Do not leave it in the machine because the yoke at the back of the monitor is fragile and will probably break.

As far as transporting from points A to B... he's going to IL, guys. That's a 25 year state, so unless it's a Bally E series or something else from the 'early 80s, he's not traveling to a legal "B". Crazy  Duh! bust gut laughing bust gut laughing
