Atari "Road Riot 4WD" arcade video game.

Any of these symptoms are traced to the same chip on the gameboard:

Cannot change game pricing. Sure you can change it from the factory default of 2 coins 1 play to 1 coin 1 play in the test/setup mode, but as soon as you exit test mode or shut off power pricing has not changed.

Volume control. The gameboard sound board does not have a physical volume control. Volume control is set by programming it in the test mode. If the volume is always going either to zero or very loud when exiting the test mode, you have a chip problem.

Game difficulty and option settings not being saved.

The chip in question is a type CAT28C16AP-20 (24 pin dip EEPROM). This chip saves all the adjustments and settings and has gone bad. Fortunately, it is socketed for easy replacement. You have to temporarily remove the sound board from the gameboard to get to this chip. On the gameboard look for the chip at location 5C.

The EXACT replacement chip is Jameco Electronics (www.jameco.com) part number 74691 and is only $3.95
