Title: IGT VIDEO POKER can't get it out tournament mode?
Post by: dancntom on March 02, 2009, 08:08:50 PM
I am a newbie here and own several machines in my game room.  My circa 1994 IGT Double  Double Bonus Video Poker somehow got set in tournament mode with a 30 minute timer and I can't figure out how to get it back to regular mode.   I have cycled the reset key several times but I do not see an option where to get it back to normal mode.....accepting coins and bills etc.   I has always accepted coins/bills etc until it somehow got put into tournament mode.   Anybody out there have any ideas.  Thanks in advance.

1. Way cool. I didn't know that they had a tournament mode for the Video Poker. This sounds like something I might want to own.
Do you know what GAME and DATA prom numbers you are using ?

2. Can you be a bit more specific about the model ? on the side or just inside the door is a metalic plate that should say Players Edge (PE) or Fortune II etc.
Fortune II's and the Orginal Players Edge did not have a bill validator. The newer PE+ had the bill validator as an option.
I think you probably have a PE+ given the date but if you can help narrow this down that would be great.
You can always post some pictures preferbly of the inside and I am sure one of our many experts would be able to identify it at 20 paces.

3. To change the options such as number of coins, denomination, color on a PE+ you simply open the door and press the self test button a number of times.
Most of the screens are pretty self explanatory. You can cycle through the screens to get back to the beginning or just close the door.
To change the options usually your bet 1 credit or deal button does the trick.

4. The PE is a bit different than the PE+ but with respect to tournament or non-tourney should simply be an option on one of these screens.

This reminds me that I did see some PE+ machines at The Orleans on my last trip that were used for a VP tournament.  ...and now I want to know how to do it on my machine!!

Indeed, please let us know what chips are in your machine (always power the machine OFF before removing the board!).  Pictures of your machine would be great, too (especially of the tournament screen(s))!

Thanks in advance!

They do Jay. I've played in a few at the casino (they don't seem to hold them anymore though :( ) I too would like to know about the chips, I've never seen any kind of option for that on my PE+ with any of the chipsets I do have. It was pretty cool at the tourneys. They gave you 15 minutes which was displayed on screen and 1500 credits. You used 5 a hand reguardless of whether you won the hand or not, the wins added up seperately. So basically you had 300 hands to play or as many as you could until time ran out. I ran it out of credits all but once or twice and cashed a few times chump change, nothing good. I'm sure you could set the time and credits thru a menu somewhere, after each "round" of the tourney all they did was turn the jackpot reset key and they were back to 15 mins and 1500 credits and 0 for the win total. It was pretty cool, I wish they'd hold them again

Jay
Thanks for the reply.  Remember I am new at this but here goes.   The mode I am talking about has a 30 minute timer and 2500 credits to start that dispalys down at the bottom of the screen. When I cycle the key it mentions "tournament" .   I have gone inside and used the white self test  button and gone through those options but they are all color, paytable on/off, etc.
The build date is 1994 and it has a metal cabinet and a bill validator.  I am attaching a picture.   I probably need better pics.
I believe it got in this mode by turning the reset keys.
I hope this info helps you.....help me.....Thanks !!!

Definitely a PE+ since the BV is imbedded, looks very nice! Very strange issue here for sure, I thought the ONLY way to get in tourney mode was thru the chipset

On the Tourney mode of the S+ you use the reset key to restart the tournament. To change between tournament and non tournament play you need to use the self-test.
Reset keys are a dime a dozen. IF this was all there was to it, any muppet could walk into a casino and put the game in tournament play (assuming it was supported).

Very much the same with the PE+. That's all they did was turn the key and it was cleared and ready to go for the next group of people to play. So how does that work jay is there like an extra option screen in the self test menu? Tournament mode on/off or something like that?

I have not seen this on the PE+ before (I want this !!) so I am assuming it has to either be an extra screen or simply an option on one.

Oh, ok. I thought maybe you were familiar with the software but just never saw it in person. I'd really like this also for mine. I've only seen it from the player's standpoint, not an owners so I'm quite curious! ;)

You guys are pretty amazing and obviously very knowledgeable.  Is there anything i can post as way of pics or info that may help lead to an answer?    I can tell you this......It was working normally, with coins and bills.......then we cycled through with the reset key and it ended up in this tournament mode we can't get it out of.   We def. did nothing on the inside to get it into this mode.
Thanks in advance.

Hmm. Very interesting. If you could get us the chip numbers maybe we can identify something that way. Or maybe some screen shots as you cycle thru the self-tests and jackpot reset. I'm quite intrigued. I've only seen game statistics by going through the jackpot reset. If ya could post some pics of the screens you see maybe we'll see something that will stand out to us

I took 5 new pics....they are the screen showing the timer and credits.......then I cycled the reset key to some of the screens with the last being "verifying game memory please wait"   then it goes back to the same tournament mode.
Thanks for looking into this.

Wow, you're definitely in tourney mode. Exactly what it looked like when I was playing in them. Thanks for the pics. Could ya snap some of the self test screens? Trying that after the time has run out and after a reset (sometimes options aren't displayed with credits on the machine, I'd assume this may be the same with the time in a tourney mode). Also if you could get us the game and data chip #'s from the chips (it appears to be a superboard set since it says "Verifying Game Memory" and doesn't just give a blank screen. Thanks for the pics, don't see anything unusual in those. I'll gladly do my best to help and there's people on here FAR better with the PE+ than myself so between us I'm sure we can get ya back up and running! :)

dancntom-

You've got a bunch of us interested, that's for sure!  We'll figure it out with your help.

Can you do me a favor and page through the menu screens (first with the door closed using the jackpot reset key, and if not then try opening the door and using the white self-test button)?

If you see a screen that looks even somewhat similar to this one (anything mentioning Game PROM, Data PROM, or CAP/Character Program), can you please post a picture of it:

We want to know what game program number is in your machine to try and tinker with the tournament settings.

Thanks in advance!  :89-

Ugh! Nice call bud. I'm such a dolt! I always forget about the chip #'s from the the game stats screen! I woulda asked him to post that before!  :25- Stupid Reppie! STUPID!  :25- lol

Alternately, if you can't get that information from the screen, can you please TURN THE POWER OFF first, then remove the tray that has the MPU board from the machine (it should just pull straight out)?

Hopefully the chips are labeled.  In particular, we're interested in any labels on the chips found in that yellow rectangle I drew in the following picture:

A picture of those chip labels would be great -- you can then put the board back in (seated firmly) and turn the game back on.  Thanks again!

All looks pretty standard to me aside from that "tournament output pulses" screen, but that seems to be all progressive stuff. Gotta look thru the on line game bible and see about the chips. Also don't worry at all about removing the board and tray. Just make sure the power is off when you do so and just dont slam it around like there's no tomorrow and you have nothing to worry about! Keep us posted as to whether any other screens show up when the timer is at 0 or after a reset :) Keep us posted, we'll get this!

Well I do see your DDB on the list at the top. Anyone know about that data chip? Maybe that's the one allowing regular and tourney play both? Now we just gotta figre out what exactly ya did to get it to switch modes lol. We'll get it!

Great info, especially the pictures of the chips -- trying to research right now, but I suspect that what Rep was getting at (except I think he meant the program chip) may be right in that it has the tournament option.

Bottom line is that we'll get you up and running -- if nothing else we'll send you a new non-tournament chip program chip!  :)

Ugh! Program indeed.  :25- I'm a living mess aren't I? lol  :30- Just thinking here for a bit, maybe there's certain sets that are both? And thru a certain special procedure (not blatantly obvious thru the screens or anything) you can switch between the 2 modes and get it into tourn mode? Maybe dan somehow did that without realizing it? A long shot for sure but just some thoughts as I was thinking here... Also on a side note I noticed your little countdown in your sig knagl. Just going to Vegas for vaca? Just funny to see, I'm going on the 9th of May.... The national bowling tourney is in Vegas this year, we fly there on the 9th :)

My mind is such mush right now that I'm not even sure anymore - maybe it is in the Data chip.   :5-

I suspect that yes, one is able to enable the tournament mode or disable it and play it as a normal machine (much like the S+ tournament games).

My trip isn't confirmed yet (ie. I haven't bought airfare yet), but it's looking pretty good.  Where are you bowling at?

lol, it's a 50/50 shot either way. It's in one of them :D I didn't realize that it was able to be enabled/disabled. I just figured when the chip was in it was in tourney mode. But if that's true for the S+ it should be for the PE+ also I would assume since they're so similar. I just paid for the airfare a few weeks ago, gotta call my slot host out eas... erm... in area 51 here :D and see what they can do as far as comped rooms go. Would be neat if you're out there too! We're at the Cashman Center which is off the strip from what I was told. It's just a convention center where they installed 60 lanes. The do this yearly (aside from when we go to Reno since the bowling stadium is there) the rent a convention center and build lanes inside it. Normally there's only 48, they were going with 56 this year but I heard they put 60 in. Rightfully so they're expecting a good turnout

OK, so I just happen to have these chips and put them in MAME to mess around with the settings.  At first I tried to mimic the S+ way of doing things with the jackpot reset key and spin button but it didn't work.  But the following DOES work:

PE+ Tournament Mode:
1) Turn and Hold the Jackpot Reset Key
2) While Jackpot Reset Key is held, press the "Change Request" button

The game should flip between tournament and standard mode (and vice-versa).  You do not have to finish the tournament countdown clock, you can do it right away.

Mystery solved!

Wow! Neat! You're the man Stol! :) Glad you're back and running normally Dan. I guess I was kinda right, it was a certain combo to get it into and out of tournament mode, not that I knew the jackpot reset and change request would do it. Cool stuff though! Great job! :)

Also do we know what sets this trick will work with if any? Is there any way to tell which ones support tourney mode etc? Cool stuff for sure! :D

Awesome stuff.  I wish I could give you +100 karma.   :3- :3- :3-

FWIW, with the S+ tournament stuff you could do time, credits, or both.  If you set credits to zero, for example, you'd get to play as much as you can within the set time period.  I don't know if it works the same way with the PE+, but I'd think it might.

Very possibly so bud, I've never gotten my hands on any tourney software but I'm pretty sure it would work that way. Great stuff! :)
