Title: Hooking up a CHAM44 !

I know that there are several topics on this but I wanted to simplify this hook up>>>

How to hook up a CHAM44 to an S+.

Cham44
a.k.a. S2 Mikohn LED 4 Logic board
This Logic board needs 12Vdc connected to the 2-pin header at location J3.
Red wire 12Vdc on left
Black ground wire on the right.

The CHAM44 needs a CON1s board connected from Pins #1 & #5 to
the J1 header on the CHAM44 to your home computer's serial output configured as COM1.
The PSP V2.0 software program is needed to program the CON1s.
Follow the instructions in the PSP Manual exactly to program the CON1s board correctly.
The serial cable has #1 & #5 pins jumped on the CON1s serial end.

A 20-pin ribbon cable is connected from the CHAM44 J4 header to
the 20-pin CHAM44 DRVR LED4 display driver piggyback board
next to the 2-pin 12Vdc J2 power header.
The other 20-pin header on the piggyback board is for linking extra display panels.
There is a notch on the headers and a nipple on the ribbon cable connector
to ensure that they are inserted in only one direction.

Each single display panel has 256 (8x32) LED dots.
A display that is called a "1x1" is one single display panel.
A display that is called a "1x2" is two display panels hooked together side-by-side.
A display that is called a "1x3" is 3 display panels hooked together side-by-side.
A display that is called a "2x3" is 6 display panels forming a rectangular display that is 2 panels high and 3 panels long.

There are many ways to design your display, but you need the appropriate 28-pin eprom chip
installed at location U4 on the CHAM44 Logic board to drive the display size.
For example: A U4 chip that that is labeled "2x3" will not correctly display on a "1x2" display. :37-
It is too large for the "1x2" display.  :25- :25- :25-

Finally, In order to add the credits played and increment the progressive amount onto the display,
you need only a two wire harness to accomplish this for an S+.
This increment harness connects this way:

From the CON1s J1 header on the #1 pin (This is the right-most pin on the the J1 header)
and the #5 pin (This would be the left-most pin on the J1 header)                   
                                      to
the S+'s motherboard J12 header on the #3 pin (This is the 3rd pin from the right)
and the #4 pin (This is the left-most pin on the J12 header)

If you follow these instructions to a T!
You should be up in a no time!!! :50-

Can you connect to the logic board via HyperTerminal like you can with a Supreme and change the size definition (like you can with a Supreme)?  :71-

I never tried? I really don't know.
The "Hyper Terminal" is built into my XP but I've never attempted to use it.
I'd have to get into it and see what it can do...

HyperTerminal is very easy to use.  I use it for telnet and ssh.

No you cannot. I am not even sure why they put the serial port there.

I've messed and messed around with those ports and find that
I cannot communicate to the CHAM44 unless I hook up my serial cable to the CON1s only.
I wonder if it's just a simple serial cable configuration that we're missing?

I agree with you Jay also, on the point that
it's extremely difficult to find any specific documentation on this anywhere.
It's almost like they've been discarded a long time ago and nobody kept any copies.
That's why I bought several different models to get a better understanding of how they work.

John Acres in one of his posts said the original designs were for universal controllers and they used the serial interface to program these.  I suspect that they were likely using different eproms than what the production eproms support and at the very least use hidden command sequences to put them into programming mode.

I remember working with PLC (Programable logic controllers in my ancient past) and we had to send some weird control sequences like <esc><esc>C<esc>P<esc>12345678<esc>R.  In this case the capital C was to get attntion which I think was similar to the old 300/1200 baud Hayes Modems, then we sent the escape Captial P for password followed by the password then we sent the R command which put it into receive mode. We could then download a 64byte (exactly) 64 byte file and we would get back a "period" . to indicated it was successful or a * "astirick" to indicate that it was in error and rejected. At no other time was there any echo from the PLC.

If we want to move this forward we need someone with a deassembler to let us look at the actual code vs the gobbly gook that we see as a hex dump. I am not even sure what processor runs these, which would be the first place to start.

It works!
video is crappy anyways, I hit F1 a few times in the film clip
while uploading jack.do files to bring it up...

Anybody use Mikohn Con2 A with IGT Gameking 19"?
