Title: Service Considerations for WMS Power Supplies
Post by: packrat79 on March 30, 2013, 05:42:56 PM
I've had a small electronics repair business for the last 15 years, and recently a potential client contacted me regarding the repair of some slot machine power supplies. Most of the units are WMS model UNI-750-1, which from what I've read on here are very troublesome to repair. Before I agree to take on such a job, there are several things I would first like to know:

1. Would it be necessary to replace any surface-mount components? If so, what kind of SMD rework station would be appropriate and what size soldering tips would be needed?

2. Is adequate service information available? I found links to schematics of the mainboard and control board for the UNI-750-1, but there are appear to be other areas of the power supply not pictured, such as a post-regulator board, 5V auxiliary supply, etc.

3. Are all necessary replacement parts available (exact replacements or suitable equivalents)?

4. Most importantly, since the client cannot bring the entire machines to my shop, I will need to create a dummy load to test the power supplies after servicing. While I may be able to figure this out from the schematics, any tips on this aspect would be appreciated.

I normally tend to avoid such challenging projects, but with the potential to be called to service these on a regular basis, I thought it was well worth doing a bit of research.
  Thanks for any advice.
