I bought this as a non working machine. It's a "TWINS"  Double Jackpot

The VFD display has random letters and symbols. No error messages in any sort of plain english. All garbled lines of characters.

Will not respond to RAM clear.

CREDITS & WINNER PAID will not light up.

None of the buttons will light up.

The DBV flickers on and off and tries to cycle.

The reels will not do there maiden spin. They flinch once in a while.

Is the Button style Battery suppose to be "+" side up?

Battery is 3 volts

Has the CPU failed?

What should I check next?

I reseated all the cables to the CPU. no changes.

Candle does not light up.

If I leave it on for a while, the VFD/LCD odd charters and random letters and numbers do change.

And the CREDIT  & WINNER display will show distored segments lit up and change constantly.

Is it possible it's going through a very long boot process?

Power supply issue?

Some times the credit & winner lite up. It spits and sputters these constant jeeberish on the displays.

Any ideas?

Fried CPU or power supply?

Is there clear chips for this machine?

Would that even help my problem?

I reseated all the chips and found someone bent over a pin and broke one off on the "System" chip # 2.
I was able to solder a new pin and reinstall the chip, but this did not help.

The fact that you found bent and broken pins on some of the chips is concerning.  Duh!
Obviously someone has been inside playing around with the parts.  Are you sure that the chips are in the correct sockets and in the correct direction?

I would also check the power supply voltages at CN1 on the CPU board.  You should have 17 VAC, 5 VDC, 12 VDC and 24 VDC present at this connector (CN-1) as follows ...
Pin 1 - 5 Volts DC
Pin 2 - 5 Volts DC
Pin 3 - Ground
Pin 4 -
Pin 5 - 12 Volts DC
Pin 6 - 12 Volts DC
Pin 7 - Ground
Pin 8 -
Pin 9 - 24 Volts DC
Pin 11- Ground
Pin 12 -
Pin 13 - 17 Volts AC
Pin 14 -
Pin 15 - 17 Volts AC

Yup, I would definitely check out the chip situation.
If they were put in backwards at some point, they could be ruined.
Did you try to clear it again after you got your leg soldered back on?

Yes someone was messing with the chips.

The chips were in proper direction and placement, but who knows what happened with previous owner.

Notch on chip to the notch drawing on the board.

Pulling out the CPU -

System #1 on the left side & System #2 on the right
Game #1 on the left & Game #2 on the right
Sound #1 on left & Sound #2 on the right

I have tried both reset procedures and the machine does not respond to any test functions or resets.

I will check the power at the CN-1 connector tonight and post results.

Both
5 VDC = 5VDC
12 VDC = 12VDC

24VDC = VDC


The 17 VAC not used on this CPU, according to the elec schematic and the wires for the 17 VAC are shrink tubed and tied up into the harness. Looks factory.

What other checks can I do?

It appears you have already checked everything that you possibly can at this point.  Scratch Head

I believe your next logical step would be to see if you can get another set of EPROMS to try.
At the very least; a set of System Chips.

I'm hoping it's the system chips, being these were the chips that had a bent and missing pin.

Since all the voltages check out correctly, I would say your safe to install fresh chips without any worries of damaging them.

You might check with slots4home for your SG 88 board, and maybe chips,  fanninislots should have the chips you need.

Well I installed another set of system chips and no luck. Display still shows garbled characters.

Probably the board?

Could the Game chips be faulty?

Sound chips cause this issue? Can the sound chips be left out to see if it is the problem?

I have a board on the way.

Hopefully that is it!

Well finally got this machine running. Bought boards and chips for this machine and ended up using the original parts in the end. The problem was all the chips needed removed and the pins cleaned. Thank You to all the ideas here and to all the members I bought parts from. Much appreciated !!! Thanks NLG !

By the way, it was hard to find parts for this SG 150B +.
