Can anyone direct me as to how I can check to see if the MPU is getting the correct voltage, or is it too in depth?
Also, how to test if fuses reset when I push the buttons?

Have not seen one of these for years but I do have schematics fot it. I assume this is for a upright machine?. If you have a multimeter you can verify that all voltages are reaching the backplane as per attached schematics (Looks like J17 is the main power input to the backplane)

Thank you very much. It's ok to power the machine up with the MPU out?

OK, this will be a very stupid question.  Silly Me!

I am not an electrician by any means. I know how to test batteries, househouse current, 120 volt, 240, etc.
I can wire up a racecar with my eyes closed......BUT..... How do I test the voltage to the MPU from the backplane, and what voltage should it be?

Hi

Had a reply typed out yesterday and my 3G connection bombed out. Lets try again. as you have already replaced PSU its unlikely that that the problem is there so lets test the fuses.

* Switch of and unplug machine
* On connector A going to PSU assembly remove and test for continuity between pins 5 and 6 (19VAc Line) and pins 7 and 8 (6.5VAC Line)

Hopefully someone with a actual machine can confirm that these instructions are correct.

Once you have determined that the fuses are intact you can switch machine on again and unplug J17 going to your backplane board and verify that all voltages are present as per previously attached diagram - There may even be test points on the motherboard.

You can power up machine with processor tray removed should not cause any problems

LOL, YEP.
MPU on route as we speak for the Alpha.

Was a combination of stupidity on my part for bending the leg on an eprom and not noticing. Won't happen EVER again!
I bought myself a GIGANTIC magnifying glass with a light on it!

The last thing I have been fighting with was the the MPU. After trying 3 boards, all of which had dead batteries, I finally was able to do a clear. but after the clear, it would do another clear by itself....... YEP

After 2-3 days of fighting the clear issue, it dawned on me it might be a clear chip problem. As it turns out, my U43 was bad, probably from the bent eprom leg. I had backup files of the mains, so I made a new set....... SAME THING!

To make a long story short, my backups were also bad???? Even backing them up on a PC DOESNT ENSURE THEIR SAFTETY! They are now on my flash drive and my main PC!
I got new Ram Clears and after the 3RD board, got it up and running on regular clear chips. good thing I had 3 boards, because I now needed U30 & U45 chips.
After trying the chips from 2 boards I got lucky on the 3rd.

SO, It's on to the ALPHA........  Silly Me! Silly Me! Silly Me!

LESSON LEARNED? TAKE THE TIME TO LOOK ONCE, TWICE, EVEN THREE TIMES after putting in an EPROM!
It will save you from the grief I have had for the last week or so!!!!

KUDO'S to all who helped!!

I APPRECIATE IT TREMENDOUSLY!!!!!!!

Jim,
aka... JR, slotsx2, and a lot of other stupid acronyms.........

p.s. Board needs a spell check....

I shoved in eproms left and right and bent a few around here but I've learned to really take my time, lay out the board on a bench if possible with a bright magnifying lamp   Sherlock Smiley and watch the pins going into their sockets as I push down on the eprom.

That way, you can ALWAYS be assured that you've done, at least that part...right!  yes

p.s. Board needs a spell check....

Scratch Head  There is one, and it's available every time you post, even when using the quick reply (which I don't recommend).

It's the button on the right when posting, quoting or replying:   [Post] [Preview] [Spell Check]

It's the middle button when editing:  [Save] [Spell Check] [Cancel]

and it's the button on the right when modifying: [Save] [Preview] [Spell Check]

P.S. It won't be of any help for those members who spell the word lose (looz) as "loose" (loos) since both words are valid with completely different meanings and pronunciations. Tongue Out Crazy frying pan rotflmao

OK, problems again....LOL

The Bally was running just fine....BUT!!
Having to pull the chips out whenever you do a clear just didn't seem right to me, not after just having to flip da switch! Soooo......
I got another set of leave in mains and I just HAD TO TEST THEM!

Before you start saying, "What, is this man CRAZY?" JUST HEAR ME OUT.........  Crazy

I pulled my wife away from the machine, ripped out the MPU, ripped out the mains and inserted the new leave in mains! I did a complete clear.
All went just fine thank you. I then turned off the power pulled the tray out half way, flipped the dip switch back on, put the tray back in, turned
on the power and................. EXCELLENT! Everything looked fine up to this point. I then pushed the test button till I got to 27 o 0001, or
whatever it is and began settings things up the way I wanted them again. Here's where the problems started!

Apparently, the U30 & U45 chips determine what options you can set, just like IGT's version chip? Am I right to assume this?
Where my old U30 & U45 chips went to is a mystery to me??? Time to scavenge around my basement looking for chips that went missing?

I LOVE MY LIFE!!!!!!!!

(NO CLUE HOW I MISSED THAT SPELL CHECK)
JR

BTW - Spell check missed this ( began settings things up )

No, the "option" settings come from the mains.  Your older mains have different "options".

I am glad to see you figured out the problem, but was sure I asked you if you checked for bad mains when I spoke with you.

I am on my desktop PC now. Several things to share.......... LOL.

Nope, the Bally 6000 still isn't right. I told the guy that sold me the machine to replace the leave in mains it had in it or else I would call him day and night until he did. After 2-3 days of him getting 2-3 calls a day, he agreed to send them. The printer did in deed work with those leave in mains. He said he would put them in the mail. He's only an hour from me so they should be here, the latest Tuesday!

I also got a new MPU in today for my Bally Alpha. Did a clear on it and after I was done with the clear, the reels just spun, not for 20-30 seconds, they spun for like 15 minutes.... LOL. Apparently I got yet ANOTHER bad PC part. An MPU this time!
WTH is going on. I put in 2 power supplies in that thing, 3 backlit reels I cant use, and RCU, a reel controller unit, and now a new MPU that obviously doesn't wotk. YIKES, the money I'm burning......

On top of everything else, I got pissed at my laptop again and threw it across the basement floor. Wonder why the screen looks all cracked with nothing but cool colored streaks in it..... WOW....what a light show!!

Signing off to see what else...OH YEAH, still getting that "Display communications error" ion my 5 reel IGT. I posted about it, but got no replys.
Think I'm just gonna pack it in and cut my losses. Nothing going right. Can't seem to get much help anymore after saying 1 thing out of line.....

OH WELL, such as it is......

OK, i gave up on that low life. He REFUSES to replace the leave in ram clear chips that were in the machine I bought from him......... SOoooo.... since I had no mains to change with the leave in ram clear chips I have no mains to put in after doing a regular ram clear!
Do the mains control if the printer works or not? Also, what are the U30 and U45 chips for?

Oh, and BTW, that "Display communications error" on my 5 reel IGT went away on it's own....    Scratch Head
