When I select the credit and pull the handle, the reels will spin just fine. However, I'm also able to pull the handle without selecting any credits (reels don't spin though). Might this be indicative of a failing handle mechanism or is there a simple adjustment I can make?

Probably a sticky handle release solenoid

Would that be a fix or a replace?

You'll need to remove it to find out. Could be bad, stuck, melted, out of place etc. Put eyes on it and see what it looks like

Okay, it's definitely a slow-moving solenoid. Any recommendations on what sort of lube I ought to use on it?

No lube. Wire brush or steel wool till it slides smoothly. Check the inside of the coil to make sure it's not distorted from heat also. If it is, buy a new one. Also, make sure the spring that pushes the ram back is in place and in good shape

Well, that was a bit tedious, but not difficult. Thanks so much for your help, Cowboy. I got her all cleaned up and stretched out the piston's spring just a bit. Reinstalled and things are back to normal. Thanks again. K+4U!!
