I have 2 cd-rom drives, one is a DVD RW/CD-RW (my drive E) and one cd-rom (my drive F).  They both show under drives on WINDOW EXPLORER.  When I click on the DVD drive (E) the folder opens but is "blank" doesn't show contents.  The second CD-rom drive (F) basically does the same except when I click on it I get message to INSERT DISK IN DRIVE F"  (there is a disk in the drive).  I'm running ZONEALARM SECURITY SUITE as my virus protection.

I also tried to run the recovery disk that came with the computer to reload the drivers for the CD drives but since it doesn't recognize drive it didn't work.

thanks Bob

I would remove the IDE cable from one of the drives (while powered off of course) and boot and see if I can access discs.  I would do it for both drives.  It is unlikely that both have gone haywire, but if one has, it could be blocking the other one.

I removed the DVD RW/CD-RW (drive E) and replaced it with standard cd drive.  Now both drives worked as they should.  I then purchased a new DVD RW/CD-RW  and installed it and had the same problem as the first DVD RW/CD-RW.
In short the problem seems to be with the computer reading a DVD RW/CD-RW and not standard cd drives.
any suggestions?????

How old is the computer?

What CPU is in the Computer?

Which Version of Windows?

Also did you limit the IDE/ATA configuration?

I would go into the BIOS setup screen and reset everything to the default or optimized settings.

Are you trying the DVD-RW drive by itself?  Does your computer have S-ATA ports?  There are some computers that have issues with IDE optical drives with specific chipsets.  I would try using a good brand name drive like a pioneer for compatibility.  If your computer has S-ATA ports, I would try a S-ATA Drive.
