I have been using Windows 7 for a while now, it found an optional update for my nVidia 8400GS installed it.
Windows 7 didn't even ask me to reboot to finish the install.
I know that each version of windows has reduced the number of reboots needed for driver and/or hardware changes as each new version of windows was developed and released.

Foster, I'm curious. Would Win 7 have provided an easy uninstall had that automated driver update caused problems?

7 is much better that vista.   Much faster and a better explorer interface.  It's what vista should have been out of the box.  Be careful I don't think you will be able to install the final release over the beta.   You will have to wipe and reinstall.

It is a pre-release of a WDDM 1.1 driver that was shown as optional update through Windows Update.

So I would gather windows would allow it to be uninstalled easily enough.
Unless I wipe the restore points oir where ever MS calls them as updates are installed.

I'll have to try my cheapo TOP EPROM programmer's software to see if the XP compatibility is any good. It's the only USB programmer I have. The TopMAX programmer is parallel. (I'm running Win7 under VMware on my Vista machine)

I think for the most part during Beta trials, Microsoft is a bit more aggressive in terms of updates and forced updates.  In the release version you can pretty much count on the way it has been since windows XP for update policies.
