Title: Konami Board Repair - EEPROMS
Post by: Itstoohard on October 16, 2012, 01:02:35 AM
Hi There
I would like some advice on what eeprom programmer to buy to handle older type roms used on TMNT, Simpson's etc.
I bought a Chinese special off eBay cheap but turned out to be a dud.
I have done pretty much all facets of board repair except programming and replacing ROMS which are becoming a key problem as the boards age.

I was told the roms on the various Mame sites are not the same code as the original roms - many are modified to suit mame T or F?
In such a case I would presume I would be hosed then ?
What is a common eeprom I could buy to replace ones on TMNT and Simsons.

I'm getting a redundancy next week so all cashed up to buy a decent programmer. Arcade boards before job hunting (of which there are not any) I say.
Thoughts appreciated
Thx Guys
Aaron.

Someone is on crack... The ROM dumps in MAME are THE ROMs from the games. They are not modified.

There are some modifications that are done to the .chd (compressed hard drive) files depending on the version of MAME and chdman that you are using... That doesn't affect the ability to decompress the file to make a replacement hard drive for a video game.

There *are* some differences in files for MAME that you DO need to be aware of. Some of the NVRAM files are different per region... an example would be the Konami NVRAM files that go on the Timekeeper chips for Silent Scope, Police 911/2, Warzaid, etc... but that is still not a "modified for MAME" thing. The "modified for MAME" just doesn't exist.

I use the TopMax by eeTools. They are NOT cheap but will program so many different things that I *rarely* ever have to break out my old-assed Data I/O Series 22 for the really ancient stuff. (I use it for the TMS2716 and 2708 EPROMs and some extremely odd Bipolar PROMs that the TopMax won't do.)
