Title: WMS 550 Noisy meters solution
Post by: rickhunter on September 16, 2008, 03:16:32 AM

Ok, after seeing the posts regarding this issue and looking at the crippled (sans actuator arm) meters, I'm kind of destruction adverse and like to keep my "vintage" (well maybe not now, but one day) machines as intact as possible and wanted to have the ability to have the noisy meters for that "authentic feel."  However, the clicking does get annoying so I decided to try the recommendation that had been posted a while back regarding this issue.  So I set out and purchased the following parts:

1.  5 watt 10 ohm resistor
2.  Molex Mini-fit Jr 2 circuit plug
3.  Female pins for Mini-fit Jr. plug.

I assembled 5 units to replace all the meters on the WMS meter assembly and they worked like a charm.  No more clicking and my meters are still "un-moded."

Here's pictures of my exercise for those interested

Rick,

Will this also work on a 360 machine?  And if so, where would I find the necessary parts?

Thanks,

Jim S

If your 360 has a meter board then it will work. The parts are ordered from places like   DigiKey or Mouser

Someone mentioned an easier solution which involved jumping out two wires on the backplane board but don't recall all the info, will have to take a look and maybe find it in search.

Yes, the jumper solution is now the easiest.  I'm probably going to do that as these things can generate some heat (i.e. uses more power). I wonder if doing this would qualify my slot as Energy Star equipment?  :72- :72- :72-

With regard to jumping 3 and 8 on the backplace board... Does anyone have a photo of where best to jump them? Jump meaning connect them together correct? Do these wires go from a connector on the backplane up to the meter assembly?

It's easier just to jump it at the end of the connector that connects to the meters board.    :89-

So take that connector off and loop the 2 wires I detailed.   :79-

do not reconnect after to the meters board, just lay inside the cabinet away from the monitor as some of the harnesses are shielded with metal (don't want that sitting inside the monitor....)   :25-

The professional way is to take a new molex connector and loop PIN 3 to PIN 8 (wire loop)  :71-   :3-

On the backplane the connector is labeled meters and will have a harness going to the meters board.   :104-

Here it is done on an S+ S-2000 with no meters. Jumper between 1 and 2, Black / orange & brown wires.

Here's the connector for the WMS video machines.  Pretty straight forward.  12 pin Molex with pins 3 and 8 jumpered.

How about Aristocrats? Is there any chance of jumpin cables for meters? I had the meters went bad, keep getting meters disconnected. Can you help please? This is the Aristocrat with the meters right at the top of the monitor....not at the top piece right below the glass....

Yes, this makes your machine believe you have a full functioning meter setup.
