Neighbor of old friend in another state has 2 Ballys: a 1090 and an E1000.
(not really sure what the difference is; these models numbers are what the neighbor sez)
Both worked fine when I last visited 2 years ago: semi-dentical basic 3-wide-reel/3 coin
machines with roughly 16" square tops kinda like an IGT 16".

Old bud sez both stopped working in the last year, and I can have either for
"a coupla' hundred."

Guys, I'm very comfortable with Mills and Aristocrat mechanicals, and now with my
new "modern" IGT S+ additions. But I am utterly ignorant of Bally.
Is either one of these units (recently stopped working) worth it? Which is the better
machine for repair/maintenance? Or are both technical nightmares?

The 1090 should be a good machine as it has no circuit boards, purely mechanical so easy to keep running.  The other one has a board, and those can be more of a pain.

Personally I like the E Series machines but if you are comfortable with Mills and Aristocrats then you might find
yourself better off with the 1090.

Bally made a 1090 E/M machine as well as an E1090. The difference is that the E-Series has circuit boards. Open the
cabinet and if you see a circuit board mounted on the left wall then that would be an E Series
