Title: Gamemaker monitor
Post by: SilverFerret on May 06, 2011, 12:44:53 AM
I usually leave my gamemaker on all the time but recently the switch that the socket is powered through got turned off (kids or house cleaning or something) and when I tried turning it back on, I noticed that the monitor didn't fire up. I turned it off and back on a couple of times and it came to life. Of course not long after it happened again and someone cut my power. Again it took multiple times to get it lit up again. This last time, someone cut my off at the power strip since we put tape on the switch to keep it from happening again and now, low and behold, the monitor wont fire up.
Is there a replaceable piece that went bad or am I looking at a whole new T/S monitor?
Thanks, Jim

I'm going to move this to the monitor repair tech support board, since it will have more visibility to the folks who will be most likely able to help you.

If that is a Tatung monitor, it is probably the power supply section of the monitor board.  C106 and C109 if I remember right, are the ones that go out often.  Just replace those caps if you don't have a way to test them.  If you have a cap tester, you should test all the caps and replace the ones that are bad.  On that old of a monitor, there are probably a lot of bad caps that are just hanging on.

You're correct on the monitor brand. Are you referring to the circuit board at the back of the monitor or along the side of the housing? Before I get to taking things apart, if you could narrow my search down I'd appreciate it. hold on, I see 106. Got it thanks.
Thanks again, Jim

Okay here's an update. I pulled both c106 and c109 caps and a tech at work tested them and c106 was bad. I replaced both with new. It still doesn't fire up but it now does a chirping noise which coensides with a blinking light on one of the circuit boards at the back of the monitor.
Does this sound familiar to anyone and where do I go from here?
Thanks, Jim

Update: I replaced 3 more caps that looked as if they may have been replaced before from looking at the soldering job in the back. First attempt at turning the power on was unsuccesful, and on the second attempt it fired right up. I don't know if it was coincidence or what I did fixed it. Not sure but happy.
Thanks for your help, Jim

I'm glad you got it going.  It sounds like you probably have a few more bad caps in there, but they aren't TOO bad yet.

If you don't turn it off, it probably won't be a problem until you have the power go out or need to unplug it for some reason.  :37-

We don't have any of those monitors anymore, and there's a lot I don't remember about them or I'd be more help with which ones to check.  I know a lot of the small ones went bad often, but they usually caused distortion, not total failure.
