Title: Display nexplex link down error
Post by: idylewild1 on November 17, 2008, 02:43:30 AM
Have a S2000 with the error message "display nexplex link down".  When the machine is turned on the display says display passes self test and then displays error message. Machine won't go into self test mode. Any help would be appreciated.

Could be simple as a loose connection.
Suggest that you check every connection to the motherboard, door I/O, cabinet i/o, power supply (behind reels if upright cabinet)

My S2000 did the same thing when I first got it.
I went through every connection at the motherboard, door and cabinet i/o, vfd.
Verified the Base, Game, Version, VFD, and SS eproms.

WCW1223 has suggested in the past to try running the machine without the LED display connected.
Leave the VFD display connected.

Hello!

I thought I remember reading something about this error having to do with the power supply behind the reels.  I don't remember where I read it...this sound familiar to anyone else?

It could be the power supply, or a loose connection at the power supply.

My S2000 will intermittently have the same issue, powering it off and then on after 15-30 seconds and its fine.

I have had this a few times and it has always been the power supply behind the reels not seated properly.

Could be one of the following

1 ) Power Supply
2 ) MPU Board and or EPROMs (Check for a red light)
3 ) Pinched Cable (Ground out) - This usually causes the game to keep resetting

That is a good start....

The power supply was loose and when tightened it fixed the problem. Thanks for all the help and input. A great place to get help and learn things.

I have 2 power supplies that are bad, does anyone know what is generally wrong and how to repair?

Usually the caps and Transistors, regulator IC's, then resistors, and inductors/coils

if my memory is goog, Change C50.. 100uF 50V in the power supply behind the reels.
The cap in in the middle of pc board.

Oddly enough I have the same problem when I forst turn the machine on and after trying to reset, curse at it open the door 600 times it seems I can just turn it on wait until the cabinet gets warm and turn it off and back on close the door and it usually works.  I couldn't find anything loose but maybe the laws of metal and heat make it work but I am still looking.  Too many other issues to work out besides this one.

You've probably got caps going bad in the power supply also. It is very common for bad caps to change value as they warm up

Nice something else not working on the machine.  But it is bon fire weather so I get to burn stuff lol.   Would that cause other errors that wont clear as well?

Any time your power supply isn't working properly you can have a plethora of issues, but you have to fix the primary problem which seems to be the power supply based on the fact that it works after it warms up. Having an extra power supply on the shelf is almost a law.

Jason   This guy gives you the general idea on how it's done, but most times it's not quite that easy. First off if the reels tend to fall over why not lay them on their side to begin with. duh

Now this guy must have spent at least a hour moving wires back away from the knob ( actually it's a screw with a knob on the end )  The part he didn't tell you is that knob has like a ratchet assembly built into it and if it was last instaled tight you can turn that knob for a week and it won't come out. You must first break it loose with a stubby #2 phillips head screw driver.

Thanks Buzz!  Good to know.  I just checked my S2k and Game King.  The GK was ultra tight, but my S2k was a little loose.  I tightened it up to the "ratchet " point that you described.  We always learn something new.

Ratchet only works one way. Guess you could call it a left handed ratchet !!  Never have had to use this link, but have it in my favorites if I ever have the need.   http://newlifegames.net/nlg/index.php?topic=1988.msg14955#msg14955
