Title: How to Hook up a Spectrum Dual Display S+
Post by: Magicslots on February 10, 2010, 05:32:21 PM
At the request of Captain Happy and others here to who I owe a lot for the knowledge they have imparted to me,
Here is the way in which to go about install a Spectrum dual display on an S+.

The Parts: 1. Power Supply Unit:    It takes its power from a two pin (with Ground ) molex from the matching plug in the top box
of the S+ that is normally hooked up to your fluorescent light already installed in the machine.

               2. The display itself:       Mounts to the rails that come with the kit in the top box, or you can do as I am doing, and build
a separate box for it. This will allow me to have a "Plug and Play" progressive that I can move easily
from one machine to another.  The Displays get their power from the two 2 pin molex plugs, and the Data moves throught the ribbon cable.
:89-  If you wish, you can use just one or the other of the displays at a time. Or set them up as a Primary and Secondary progressive.

               3.  The Double Bulb
                    Fluorescent Lighting
Mount:                    (Not shown in the first picture)  Mounts to the  tray that hold the power supply, if you install in a 16 in box or
                                                  round top.

               4.  24 Volt Cooling Fan:    I am unsure of exactly where you would mount this, depending upon your machine/installation.  :91-
But I would recommend using it, as these displays generate a fair amount of heat, and that is the primary killer of LED's

The first picture shows all the connections on the display unit and what the different plugs are:    (Note: The 110/120 VAC plug that supplies the display's power, has a ground on it)

The second picture shows the standard plugs in the top of my 9 inch chop-top S+.
The 15 pin molex plug in the center of the box plugs into the matching plug on the power supply to the display.
If you have a 16 inch or a round top, you will have plenty of room to put the entire assembly as it was made in without
a problem  But it will take some modification of you want to cram it all in a 9 inch.  Iin the future, I will use a single display in the box
when I get a game with a single progressive glass for the top box.
Depending on your box factory cutouts, you could install the fan for cooling, with only a cutting out of your Formica cover like on the left side of this box.

These next two pictures show the power plugs and ribbon cables plugged in to the back of the board, and the
entire set-up (without fan) in the bracket that comes with the unit and the dual bulb lighting. As it would fit in a 16 inch box

Now its a simple matter to match up the molex plugs to the right spots and get ready to power the unit up.  :81-
Unless, you are doing it like mine,  I had to make some extensions harnesses for the power-in plug and the power to the lighting plug.
I removed the candle and routed all the wiring through the little hole where the candle wiring went through.  It's a tight fit but will work.
:30- Believe it or not, but the ribbon cable will pass through the hole too, but it is a tight fit, and I think it puts too much stress on it, so i abandoned the
attempt in favor of a separate hook up for the top of the box.

:81-   :81-   :81-  Now before you power up for the first time.  Go ahead and remove your MPU board (power off first) and make sure
the dip switches are set for your games progressive, single or double.

These two pics show the cables plugged in (with the extensions) and rerouted through the candle hole, and the display setting on the top of my machine.

Finally, when you get it all powered up, you should have zeros on the display.  Check your PSR and it should tell you which page
on the self test menu you need to set it up.
This pic shows what the display looks like when properly mounted in a 16 inch box.  Good Luck and Enjoy!!  :200-
