Title: Has anyone tried used a USB to RS232 to program a Mikohn ChamII+
Post by: Jordan on March 31, 2012, 11:06:33 PM
Hi, I have a ChamII+ on the way to put in a Bally 5500 as a stand alone progressive.

I started looking around at my computers & non of my laptops have an RS232 port (9 pin serial port).

I do have a USB to RS232 adapter

 http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?c_id=103&cp_id=10311&cs_id=1031104&p_id=2067&seq=1&format=2

Has anyone used this to program the ChamII+

Also can someone please point me to PSP v2.0 or 3.0, all google searches point to Sony PSP

Thanks

Jordan

I tried and tried to get a USB to serial to work....Just does not...Resorted to bringing back a dead computer with Windows 98 with a serial port...I first tried getting a cheap laptop but that was just a nightmare-nothing on it really worked, but I only paid $10 for it...

If I'm not mistaken the program runs in 'DOS' mode and needs access to a physical hardware serial port.

You are correct...Which is why a USB to serial adapter will not work and the software will not work with Vista or Windows 7...I don't think it works with XP either..

I have used a USB to Serial Adapter to program a few Cham II+
You have to use Windows XP 32 bit.
Vista, 7 and 8 will not work.
I have even programmed them with XP running on Oracles/Sun Virtual Box since my main Operating System is not XP
Depending on when I needed to do it my main Operating System was Vista, 7, and OS X

You need to use a USB to Serial Adapter based on a FTDI chip www.ftdichip.com
I have even used XP on Virtual Box to program EPROM's

Thanks for the info everyone, the wife reminded me of an old laptop we had in the closet, it is running windows 98 & has a serial port so I should be ok as soon as I make my cable.

Thanks again

all you need is a standard serial cable
solder a jumper on the cham II+ between 1 and 5, the pins at each end of the 5 pin row.
