Title: Why has Garfield gone retro?
Post by: StatFreak on February 24, 2010, 10:48:10 AM
You may have noticed that as of midnight, all of the non-Sunday Garfield cartoons have reverted from color to black and white. I checked, and it's not an issue with the provider, it's almost certainly coming from the publisher!  :37- :37-

They have apparently decided to publish in black and white from today forward, and also seem to have required sites that keep past strips to revert all non-Sunday comics released within the last 30 days (since Monday 1/25/10). I was able to find one site that had not complied, and which still had all of the previous strips in color, but even they had a black and white image for today's strip. Obviously, no color strip is available.

Perhaps most of the sites don't actually save copies of older strips, but instead relay all of their images from the publisher's server. That might explain why only one site still has color strips for the most recent 30 days, while the rest do not.

The days of black and white newspaper comics during the week and color comics on Sunday went out decades ago, and most major strips are published on the web in color seven days a week. So what is wrong with these guys?! What could possibly cause them to take this action?

Garfield has been published on the web in color for a long time (I'm not sure just how long), so if they're worried about people saving and copying the strips, they're just a tad late. And if so, why a retroactive conversion for only 30 days? Why not modify (or demand modification of) all of the archived strips? Perhaps they've just decided to save some money, but that doesn't make much sense, either. How much could this action save given today's technology?

I want my Garfield in color!! :31- :61-

I'm just curious as if it's to some of the newspapers that still print B/W comics during the week having problems with the color feeds

Maybe the newspapers asked the artist, publisher of Garfield to go back to B/W so they could also do the same to save some cash in the long run.
Newspapers are in a money crunch as well.

:212-  I agree. After seeing the completed machine, I just had to go back and re-watch your Garfield video. :31- :92-

Cfh, it seems that your post has forced the powers that be to go back to printing color comic strips. :200- :208- :208- :208- :208-

It now appears that yesterday's change was a glitch in the publisher's system. It's interesting that it affected an entire month's worth of strips, but not the older ones. It also uncovered the websites that keep their own hard copies of the strips and that don't rely on a remote link for everything. They're the ones that didn't lose color on the older strips yesterday... :79-
