Picked up these 2 machines today, going to have my hands full with them, their in pretty bad shape. Was thinking of maybe doing a step by step resto guide with pics, showing how to remove rust from the chrome, & some tips for getting all the bits & pieces up to par.

Yuck, good luck with your project.  That motherboard in the picture might be shot if it was under water.  Sad

They look good from outside --inside i agree with KNAG looks like they  took a dip underwater -salt water at that . gives a more prounounced rust --being the nosy person I am where did you dig those up ??. no pun intended ..no way can that mother board be any good if it comes out in one piece .
goodluck on the mission .. the 5-line red wht blu is a fun game hits frequently with a high % chip

Picked them up from a buddy of mine. I finished restoring the interior of the red white & blue today. It was the badly rusted one, ended up gutting it out, sand blasting & refinishing it. Ill post a pic of the end results.

Clap Clap Clap Clap Clap Clap Clap Clap
SUPER JOB SLAM !!!!
VERY IMPRESSED ..

YOU OBVIOUSLY HAVE EXPERIENCE IN PAINTING & REPAIR ETC .

for members who have not restored machines before - time consuming to  sandblast /meteror blast /bead blast etc lots of fun when you notice "SLAMS" before & after pics

that is one heck of a before & after --outcome and time consuming .
very rewarding feeling and fun ----the clear coat really makes it shine !!!

you should take the next one you find remove the laminate on outside of cabinet and do up a awesome paint job

A round /top is a great specimen to do a practice run on --de laminate the cabinet clean off the goo & glue - prep it -paint it a nice dark cherry color with gold pinstrips off the top from candle down -even if you had a MUNSTERS THEME MACHINE ? based on the 5X pay theme
dark green colored glass in dark cherry r/t cabinet painted with several clear coats -get rid of the IGT candle and mount
a "real looking" lighted plastic candle with gold pinstripes dripping down from candle on round top with a few spider webs small in size in ight green color . that react to "black lights "you have a cool looking machine -wow almost sounds like its been done already . no harm in passing on ideas

Thank you.  Those are some really good ideas, I most definitely will apply them to this next one. I rescued a Triple Diamond to from certain destruction. It has been lying on its back on a pallet, outside, uncovered for the last couple months. It is by far the worst one I have acquired to date. The remaining wood on it is all bloated & will need to be replaced. I will replace it with cabinet grade ply which will make painting it a breeze. The inside is not half bad, all things considered. Alot of rust, spiders, & a few snake eggs (yep... you heard me right, "Snake Eggs"). LOL I'll post some pics as I progress on it.

your triple diamond is a interesting looking machine looks like a production run of 1989 or possible 1990 .
 I notice a few things . is it a S-MODEL OR S+ ?
easy way open door see if the main board has 3 molex plugs going  to main board center in back of hopper --NOT ON THE LEFT SIDE OF THE EARLY S+

If it has two long black molex plugs in from top & one from lower left its a "S" SERIES IGT & has a reg light bulb on belly pan lower left and hard meters on left with imbedded speaker

next is what is the VGA 15-PIN OR 9-PIN SERIAL DB-9 CABLE IN THE OPEN AREA TO RIGHT OF REELS ?? what did that power or provide video display to ??

Rocket, Actually, that cabinet is a post 1993.  Can tell by the top trim.  What is strange, it's using an earlier button panel casting.  Looks like a mismatch of parts, button casting used from 1985 to 1993, and a cabinet that looks newer than that.  However, there is also something strange in the way of that art work in the middle of that casting, makes it even more mysterious.

BTW, to tell an S game from an S-Plus without looking inside, there is one dead giveaway.  On the earlier S gamesw, the coin head casting has a coin return button, one you pish down, in event of a coin jam.  Starting with the S-Plus in 1989, they did away with the coin return button, as everything was moving to coin comparitors at the time.  But beside that, everything was the same in appearance from the outside.

thanks for the info and NO DISRESPECT but I am well aware of the normal looking models of
IGT  S OR S+ I have detailed pictures of a S series in my profile pictures that I believe were used on the forum in a topic "S" OR "S+" helping out a member 4 -5 years ago identify what he had  -when i brokered a deal of  250 to 300 of them and kept one for myself.   I was assuming which I know I am not wrong are the other points you pointed out the coin head assembly etc but that could have been changed easily enough  the original BUTTONS were also different  S-SERIES it had a poker style button or PE  poker style button also on S series many S SERIES  -- were painted cabinets vs the laminate . not saying all were painted cabinets for the critical post pickers .
then to confuse matters worse they were retro fit by many casino's with the "SIDE CAR" DBV ON rt side since many built near the end of the 80's were pre wired for them .
check out the pictures on my profile of the unmolested S series the man who passed away that i brokered the casino items purchased 300 of them 1 year old at the time --my memory was 1987 he had and added some 89's .. spent thousands & had millions into his game room . it was a heart breaker to tell him while he was going liquid before he passed away that the 1100.00 he paid each for the IGT S-SERIES IN CHOP TOP AND 16 INCH he had  at the time . they were only worth what a basic game kit was worth today . 25.00 to 50.00----- bucks each .
that single S-SERIES I have runs daily with all the rest . its just limited on games that can be played because the RS# on the newer S+ GAMES never existed ..

Its a s+ dated 4/94. the cable you see in there is for the BV. I managed to get the machine gutted out today, unfortunately the chrome on the door is not salvageable. I'm going to sand it down, etch prime it, & paint it black with some striping to match the glass.

its to bad you did not take a picture of the door open . because there are to many little things that dont add up on that picture
with years posted .
the payline glass does not look like it goes all the way across ? the DBV  up in the reel section ?not under reel glass on rt .

does the belly glass come out from the inside of the door in front of the bulb  or does it have  flip open belly door  ?

the serial cable there period for a dbv ? or was it for player tracking ? points card etc .
the later model trim on top box with what looks like a early button deck panel ?
are all the parts inside as they would be for a s+ with the mpu on back cabinet straight back if door open or on left side door open ?

OK ITS A S+ THAT PART IS CLEARED UP ALSO  CLEARS IT UP THE MPU IS  ON LEFT SIDE OF DOOR NOT STRAIGHT BACK ..

ITS A OLDER MACHINE NOT POST 93

PRE 93 BECAUSE THE GIVEAWAY IN THE FIRST PICTURE FACING IT HEAD ON IS THE COIN RINGER/DEFLECTOR METAL SQUARE TAB IN MIDDLE OF  DOOR /COIN TRAY IN PICTURE  THEY PUT THOSE ON THE "S" SERIES & EARLY S-PLUS SERIES  -MACHINE DOORS SO THE COIN HITS THE METAL AND IT DEFLECTS TO BOWL AND RINGS OUT REEL LOUD .

IF YOU READ A COPY OF  IGT'S MARKETTING PROGRAM LITERATURE??? >>>>>>HOW TO ATTRACT A PLAYER<<<<<<
TO PLAY A MACHINE MAKE THE SOUND OF COIN HITTING TRAY LOUDER . THEY ADDED THE METAL DEFLECTOR SO COIN HIT THAT AS IT SPIT OUT FROM HOPPER TO RING LOUD ALONG WITH HITTING THE TRAY

THE BUTTONS ARE NOT CORRECT FOR THE YEAR THEY HAVE BEEN SWAPPED OUT .

PLUS I ALREADY KNOW FROM REVIEWING THE FIRST PICTURE THE BELLY GLASS COMES OUT FROM THE DOOR OPEN IN FRONT OF BULB NOT THE FLIP DOWN DOOR ON LATER DOOR DESIGNS -THANKS FOR THE PICTURES
I  HAVE NEVER SEEN A >>>>>>EARLY MODEL<<<<<< LIKE THAT EVER WITH THE
>>>>>>DBV IMBEDDED IN THE REEL GLASS AREA <<<<<.
IF YOU WANT SLAM?? SO I DONT HIJACK YOUR THREAD ????? CAN POST  PICTURES OF A 1989 S-SERIES CHOP TOP
AND A 1991 S+ SERIES 16-INCH TOP BOTH WITH MPU IN DIFF SPOTS THE S-SERIES IS STRAIGHT BACK BEHIND HOPPER WITH THE 3-MOLEX PLUGS THAT ACTUALLY PLUG INTO BOARD RS CHIP MODEL ONLY . AND THE S-PLUS SERIES WITH SIDE LEFT CABINET MOUNTED MAIN BOARD .

JUST SAY OK SO I DONT HI JACK THE THREAD SLAM -SO MEMBERS CAN SEE THE DIFF DESIGNS WE ARE TALKING ABOUT ALONG WITH THE EARLY STYLE BUTTONS YOU SHOULD HAVE ON THAT MACHINE .

""UNLESS IT WAS A CANADA MACHINE"" LOL THEY DO THINGS FUNNY UP THERE LOL ==KIDDING

SLAM ____Just a follow up you will notice that style machine the triple diamond is made a bit lighter than the others .
its not because it was a cruise ship model its just the design of the slot for the year period of time etc .the 16 inch top models actualy flexed a little left to rt
the only trouble those had that was very common is the molex plugs on the M/B on the left side of cabinet would loosen up and get burnt contacts . I have around 15 of those still in use today . some had the DBV RETRO FIT --The Side Car model I mentioned in the  previous part of this thread -others I removed the side car DBV just because I like coin only on some ..
Also if  heavy use of machine the wires going to the side mounted Main board  would  get a bare wire -

Other thing is the transformer area there should be a small black plastic cover for coins that overshoot the hopper on a full hopper they land right on top of the electric terminals and then poof a fuse pops if your lucky ?

so if you dont have one -i have seen many a machine come in that had a home made piece of plastic or rubber mat cut and taped over the transformer so it does not happen -the coin that overshoots a full hopper or just fly's down the coin head and misses the hopper and hits the back wall of machine to land on the transformer connections & arc welding happens .

Wow, being made in 1994, this had to be one of the last S-Pluses made with the old casting.  And yes, the buttons have been changed out for the newer embedded bill acceptor type of button panel.  Also the latest production cabinet I have seen where the board is on the left hand side.

As for the bill acceptor, notice how the reel glass deviates from typical IGT?  There were a couple aftermarket sellers back then that were offering update kits to put a B/V in the older machines, the new idea after the box on the right side had been sold for awhile from these same suppliers.
the newer kit came with a short reel glass to replace the original, and the insert for the dollar acceptor.  notice the dollar acceptor is using the same displays that came with the machine.

I love old IGT history!
