Title: NLG on an iPhone stinks! It lags badly!!
Post by: jdkmunch on June 09, 2010, 04:08:52 PM
Hey I've been wanting to ask this for months cause it's really been bothering me.   I have an iPhone and an iPad on which I check NLG all the time.  The problem is this: when I go to respond to a question - the typing really REALLY lags.  It's almost unusable.

What would cause this?   Those icons above??  :103- I've only noticed it on NLG.

:99-

Someone else here must notice the same thing.

That's actually comforting to know that it's the same on a Balckberry.    It gives me hope that something can be done.

I changed the title - even though this is the rant thread! I didn't like the language.

The problem is that those wap sites were designed for devices that couldn't render Internet sites properly.   The iPad and iPhone and all the android phones now browse the web like a desktop computer.

I have to try using a quick reply and see if that lags too -  It's only typing responses that lag and I have a feeling it's the icons that cause the problem.

yeah cause I can do everything perfectly - EXCEPT answer posts.  It's the typing that hangs up.

Browsing, replying clicking post etc - all work as fast as on a PC.

...but the QuickReply doesn't have the icons.   :103-

I would have to agree that the smileys downloading could be slowing it down some, that is why most of the ones that we have on the reply page are smaller, and the bigger more involved ones are on the popup page when you hit [more]

Curious to see what you experience on the quick reply.

I have a Sprint Samsung Instict, and it is slow and clunky to go on to NLG. For a couple weeks I had a Sprint HTC Hero, and that was much better as it is web based... I had a couple big issues so I took it back withing 30 days and was/am holding out for the new Sprint HTC EVO 4G... I played with it in the store and it was awesome.... 4.3" Diag screen on a flippin phone! I went onto NLG as a guest and it worked well, but I would not log on for obvious security reasons, so I am not sure about it posting replies??? I am waiting to see if they have one more software release on the EVO before I get it as it still has a big flaw in the SW, currently you can't push the button on your BT Headset to get Voice Dialing... WTF my 10 year old RAZR does that!

I've experienced slowness on older computers with NLG too, due to all of the animated smilies above the reply area.  One possible solution would be (if it's possible in the forum software) to use a still image of each smiliey rather than displaying all of the animated ones.  When the post is displaying it'd still use the animated version, but on the reply page they'd all be still images.

As long as you use the quick reply your fine.  What I don't like is that even on the iPad you have to do this.

Just how crazy is it that we are complaining that our "phones" are too slow on the internet...... Just think what we would be complaining about 10 years ago!  :208- :208- :208-

Early Smart Phone: Kyocera QCP6035 (2000)
If you're one of the many fans of the Palm OS-based Treo phone, you might want to thank Kyocera. The company's QCP6035 smart phone, which hit the retail market in early 2001 and cost between $400 and $500 (depending on the carrier), was the first Palm-based phone to be widely available to users. It included a measly 8MB of memory, and sported a bland monochrome display, but it paved the way for future products.

Hefty: Motorola DynaTAC 8000X (1982)
In 1973, Motorola showed off a prototype of the world's first portable cellular telephone. That phone, which measured more than a foot long, weighed almost 2 pounds, and cost $3995, ultimately became commercial available in 1983.

I had one of these in 1989/1990.... my company paid 795.00. My buddy then bought a flip phone less than 1/2 that size in 1991. He paid 1095.00 and I thought him to be insane spending that much money out of his own pocket to own the worlds smallest portable phone....

Jay,

I never had the BRICK phone, but I can brag about having the first (?I think?) flip phone around that time frame... It was the Fujitsu Pocket Commander. Boy was I cool, and I got a great deal as I think it was only about $895, and the company picked up the tab! Cell bills back then were huge as compared to today!!! I felt like cellular royalty when I walked into the store back then, especiall when they looked up the account.... that was the good old days when they treated business users as respected customers, now adays they would rather service 12 year olds as they spend more on phones now!  :30- :25- :97- :97-
