Title: A little smoke... LED upgrade
Post by: aplmak on November 01, 2010, 08:47:30 PM
Well I tried replacing some of the button and display lamps with two different JKL LED lights.. They are both are 12VDC lamps and I figured if anything could go wrong it would just burn the bulbs... well after I powered it up the button light did work but the smaller lamps for the coin lamp for example did not. A few seconds later a foul electronic burning odor started.. I immediately turned it off and took out the LED's but I don't know what I burned out.. I powered it back up and it worked fine... I think I burned a power supply somewhere inside.. Does anyone know what I may have burned out?? Where do these lamps get their power from??? I think it may have done some damage but didn't comletely burn out. Any help on what I may need to replace would be great!!! The LED's have some small resistors in them which could have caused an issue with a power supply... What voltage do these run on anyway??

Which machine did you put them in?

It could be the resistors in the bulbs. Its usually the resistors that make the foul smelling stink.

That or the clutch....... oops no clutch on a slot.

S+, This doesn't make sense... The bulb's resistors seemed to be ok after I took them out.. I don't know.. Perhaps something happened to go also right at that time when I was doing this.. the bill acceptor power supply maybe? I did not verify that... What voltage do these lamps run on for the buttons and denom and coin accepted, etc lights?? I have no idea what cooked...

This is where I got them from:

and these two part numbers: LE-0504-01W and LE-503-03W

Yup... fried resistor... will solder new one tomorrow... :) People who put in LED's should know this risk... the wires go on both sides of the wedge and this is what causes it...

Topic moved to the S+ board, as this is not a repair log.

aplmak   I looked at the link you put up from JKL and it looks like your putting 12 volt led's in a machine designed for 6.3 volts

Your right... I am putting 12V in a 6V.... have to get some 6V's... the 12's are a little dim... :)
