Title: BTTF Pinball Free Play Setting
Post by: mah on November 01, 2010, 10:40:17 PM
Hey,

First post in this section.  I have a Back to the Future Pinball (Data East) and I can't figure out how to get it back in free play mode.

I had to replace the power supply and while I was at it, the batteries.  The previous owner removed all the coin drop hardware so I can't just open the door and move a lever.

It was working fine but I had to remove the glass and score a bunch of points to "earn" credits.  Neighbor kids used all the credits, now it sit's idle.

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks,

Mike

Do you have the manual?  The Free Play adjustment is listed on page 17 -- it's adjustment number 32.

If you don't have the manual, you can download it from the Internet Pinball Database.  Here's a direct link to the manual (right-click and "save as..." to save it to your computer): http://www.ipdb.org/files/126/Data_East_1990_Back_to_the_Future_Manual.pdf

You can find the adjustment in page 22 of the .pdf, which is page 17 of the manual.

Just a reminder: When changing batteries make sure that the game is powered on so that you don't lose the settings. Also, you should use a power strip to turn the power on and off to the circuit that your games are on. This includes slots, Pachinko/Pachislo etc since the transformer stays on when you turn off the power switches on the games.

Thanks for the advice guys.

I'm following the instructions beginning on page 11 of the downloaded manual and can't seem to enter the audit mode.
With the forward/reverse switch down, pressing the step switch displays, for service call 1-800-Kickers.  Pressing it again goes into a status report, each additional press of the button tests all aspects of the machine.

No matter what combinations of buttons I press, including the start button, I can not get to any of the codes listed on page 12 to display to change any of the settings.

What am I doing wrong?

Thanks,

Mike

P.S. - I tried the same procedure with the forward/reverse switch up, just in case it somehow was reversed.  No luck.

I've never worked on a DE machine and can't provide too much help, but have you tried this?  Looking back to page 5 of the manual, I think it says to press the step button once with the switch in the forward (up) position to enter the Audit mode.  Then, fast forwarding to page 11, it says that once you're in the audit mode, put the switch to the reverse (down) position and press step.  So, I'd try a push of the step button with the switch up, then move the switch down and press step again to see if that gets you where you need to be.

Also check that all of the wires are connected and are tightly soldered. I had a problem and it was the wiring to the up/down button inside the coin door.

Thanks for the tips guys.  I'll try both later this week.

Just a thought, is there a way to find out where the wires that went to the coin mechanism are so I can just wire them to a switch to put credits on the machine?  Again, previous owner removed entire coin mechanisms and the wiring to them.

I have the wiring diagrams but am not very good at reading them.

Thanks again,

Mike
