anyone know it putting led lights in the backlit reels of an s2000 will work, without causing damage. or would it require a different controller??

You can do it, but I do not really recommend it. :60- For the most part you end up getting a spotlight look right in the middle of the symbol, and it looks like crap. :25- Someone else may have had better luck? :103- I have seen the IGT factory LED reels (it does not have bulbs, but rather a PCB with surface mount LEDs) and they do look really nice, but you need a different controller unless you have the backlit controller that does incandescent and LED, plus you need a new reel shelf for your new reels as well!  :56- :56- :56-

Has anyone tried these WLEDs ?
These are supposed to be "Wide-Angled-LEDs" of about 75 to 130 degrees of angle?
They sort of look like these but of the proper voltage.

If I remember correctly you then get 4 or 5 distinct spotlights!!! :279- :8- :37- The original XE359 Xenon bulb is the way to go unfortunately. Also if you are not using the XE359, you will have a dimmer backlit look. (I think some people try to use 658s) Unfortunately it is disappointing trying to use LED bulbs for backlighting, but you never know maybe someone found a LED that works great and will post pictures. I am looking for my spotlight picture so you can see how bad it looks with the LED installed.

I put an LED bulb in one reel on my double diamond and it immediately wrecked my control board to where the bulb wouldn't turn off at all even after switching back to zenon bulbs. The" test" cost me $30 for a new board. They have controllers for led backlight reels. When I converted my Cleo I got the controller from Jim at Blueridge

So you're telling me in all these years that XE359 bulbs have been on the market nobody has made a suitable LED replacement for them? Or is XE359 a specific (gas filled) name for a generic bulb size?

LED conversion is the way to go. I converted my Cleo and they look awesome when lit and go completely out when not needed:)

I've yet to see a 3 reel LED conversion anywhere.

how is shipping from digikey and mouser compaired. is the extra cost of bulbs cheaper with shipping . than buying from happ

I just went into Digi-key and pretended I was ordering 100 bulbs and shipping via USPS was $5.15 to the west coast.

the bulbs at digi-key  are listed as XE359-ND  or XE359 . any idea what the difference is (ND)

(ND) means "Not Dead"?

I was just kidding about the "Not Dead" term but I've heard of certain bulbs being "non-polarized".
I wonder if that's what they meant when they use the (ND) in the product title?

Cowboygames says he is happy with his conversion, but most folks disagree. I tried LEDs in my Wms reels and did not like the spotlight effect. I put back the regular bulbs.

I think the LED bulbs would work best in a 5 reel game, since there's only 1 back light bulb per stop, not 2 like on 3 reelers

Nope looks like poo-poo! I put an led back in that Buzz and I had experimented with on my 5 reel Triple Butterfly 7's machine. The led is in the center light of the first reel, and I disconnected the fluorescent reel light so that these pictures would come out better! I got an ok hit that I am showing off as well!  :88-

I wonder if you put some diffusing paper over it, like waxed paper, if it would eliminate the spot light effect? Or maybe that's just too much of a pain.. would be to me anyway.

If anything, you'd probably be better off putting the diffusing paper behind the reel strips instead of in front of the LED. If I owned one (and I do have a Wms Dot), I'd just leave the incandescent bulbs as is.

With my luck it would start a fire!  :5-

You both were "spot" on when you figured the xenon bulb works just fine!

You know what looks good?  Pulling the assembly out and replacing and/or cleaning all of the bulbs, and mirror like housing that they sit in, along with an intense cleaning of the backlit strips front and back.  Get everything dust/nicotine free, and it lights up like a mofo! 

And you expect us to believe you when you told us that you won't wash your prints off the glass that you are sending to Bill prior to bubble wrapping! :97-

I can see your point in those pictures, but my led conversion on the cleo was circuit boards with 3 led chips per board so no spotlight effect. I'll try and post a picture tonight or tomorrow.

It can't be too hard to make little circuit boards with some onboard LEDs.
All one has to do is get the specs on them and fabricate them for themselves!

I can get you the specs if you want to give it a try. Mine came off a set of 2 1/4 reels made by IGT, but you're right, should be a huge deal to make them

I swipped boards, motors and wiring harness' off all five reals so I don't remember at this point and can't check because I'm at work, but I'll get you an answer on that. Not sure why IGT hasn't gone to LED on their 3 reel slots yet either. I bought some reel sets made in '08(same year as the 2 1/4" reels I scrapped for my Cleo) and they still had the xenon bulbs.

That was what I was pointing out way back at reply #1.... That is the way to go that looks good, but it is a big hardware change... If you can find and afford it.

It would be great if you can post some pics as it would be good for people to see what it looks like. Is yours a factory conversion, or did you cowboyize it?

To answer other peoples questions... on the factory setup they are different reels and other hardware, not just a plug in circuitboard with leds on it.

They were factory reels that I beleive are used normally in the "reel touch" games. Only modification I had to make was when I transfered the light housings over to the narrower reels I was getting a little reel rub against the new housings, so I used a sanding wheel on my dremel tool and sanded the support arms that go from the center of the reel to the outer ring down a bit. Those support arms have a ridge on them and I sanded it back about an 1 1/2 down the arm to clear the light housing. I probably took about an 1/8" of thickness off it, but they are still very sturdy :89-
