Title: 256/512 Jumpers
Post by: whinkle on November 22, 2008, 08:48:05 PM
Can someone explain to me the 256 and 512 Jumpers above the Game Prom and Reel Proms?  How do you determine what these should be set at and how do you know which one your chips are???

I would assure they are meant to set the type of EPROM memories you are using in your REEL and GAME sockets.

You could have eventually a game set of EPROMs type 27C256 (256 Kb ROM memory), or you could have sets of EPROM type 27C512 (512 Kb ROM memory).

Jumpers has to be set according the memories you are using in your board.

EPROM memory number is written over the EPROM surface in white letters.  If your game EPROMS are covered with labels (as they should be) remove them to see what you have.

Best Regards

Those jumpers do not refer to ROM memory Size.
They are the Number of Virtual Stops in the Reel ROM
Most ROMS we get for home use are 256 stops or less.

I am sure that I read somewhere that they are for eprom size

Are you referring to IGT machines?

Thanks,
Wayne

Verify that the E15/E16 jumper is in the
correct position. If the program EPROM is
labeled 27256 or 27C256, make sure the
jumper at the upper right corner of the
EPROM is on the E16 position. If the program
EPROM is labeled 27512 or 27C512,
make sure the jumper is in the E15 position

This is out an of IGT software manual.

The same goes for Bally Gamemakers and others.

Thanks,
Wayne

Early SP programs were on 256 Eproms, and IGT always makes games backwards compatible to previous platform software, still today, you could use RS software from a "S" Slot in a "S+" Slot and they were on 256 Eproms, later SP (Game Chips) were on 512's and SS Programs are on 64's, (there are also SS programs made in the late 90's on 128's) I had/have over 400 S+ with SP's in the low 200 numbers that were on the floor of a US Casino only a few years ago, and the SP's are on 27C256 and you do have to change the Jumper next to the Eprom (just a note the 128 SS chips I mentioned were for Barcrest games on 16mhz boards) they were burnt on a offset probably due to no new 64's available

So how do you determine which one your chips are to make sure you set the jumpers right?  Most of mine just have labels on the top that says what they are... like (Double Diamond 2cn) and nothing else.  What would happen if you had it set wrong?

If you set them wrong You might get an error. I never have had to change mine....most of the really large number of virtual stops were related to games like Wheel of Fortune which are WAP (wide area progressives) and linked to other machines.

If you check out Ricks FAQs it will show you how to deterime what chips you have in your machines label or not.
A PAR sheet (Paytable and Reel) will tell you what the charateristics of your chips are.

Well, I looked at all of my MPU boards and they are all set for the 512 position.  I have the following Game Chips and according to the PSR's they are all 512... SP731, SP790, SP1145 and SP1271

You will probably never need to change these jumpers. In point of fact, if you had an SP chip so old that it was a 27c256 (and you probably never will), everyone here would tell you to get a later SP version rather than worry about the jumper.

Cool.  Thanks everyone for their input on this.  Being relatively new and afraid I might fry the machine  :25- I tend to ask a lot of questions, but everyone has been great!!
