Title: I made something different for the S+ today...lol Post by: stayouttadabunker on November 08, 2010, 07:09:01 PM I "Bunkerized" one of my reel glass inserts today... :267-
I imagine it could probably work with other reel glasses as well. I'm thinking of selling this mod with you giving me 3 easy monthly payments of $19.95...lol (Just kidding... :122- :122- :122-) The cool thing :133- about this message display is that it fits just about perfectly behind the reel glass where normal message insert says>>> "The hopper inside only has about 75 quarters in it. If you hit the Cash Out button - you will wait forever for some lazy attendant to come refill the hopper". :72- Anyways ...enjoy the crappy video clip I made... ( there's absolutely no way I can slow down the camera's shutter speed to keep up with the letters scrolling across the display...oh well ) Believe, it looks way better in person! Remember to tinker every day! :96- >>> http://www.youtube.com/v/1MWqbWDustE?hl=en&fs=1 (http://www.youtube.com/v/1MWqbWDustE?hl=en&fs=1) Title: Re: I made something different for the S+ today...lol Post by: StatFreak on November 08, 2010, 07:46:22 PM It does look like a good fit. I think I got it about a month ago and really it was Dorothy McCaw that found it! I must give her full credit for finding such a neat display! I bought one as well, took the 4 screws off, kept the led board and the red lens. I basically used a little silicone-like glue called "Goop" and put a little bit of the adhesive along the edge of the lens to attach it to the LED board. When the adhesive dried, I then attached (with a little bit of black hockey tape) and stuck it onto the Insert area on the back of the reel glass. There's a very small slit on both sides of the ends of the LED board that lets too much reel light to come through - which the black hockey tape nicely covered up. Now, for the power supply. There are many ways to do this to make it look like it was done professionally. I ran the cord from the LED board up on the reel glass along the door hinge to a 2-pin Molex. This harness is only about 4 inches long. Then I used a cheap Walwart 12Vdc power supply and plugged it into the front of the machines' power supply box 120Vac auxiliary power work outlet. I ran the transformed 12vdc power cord from the Walwarts up toward the back of the cabinet up to the back of the reel tray towards the door hinge. There, I attached a female 2-pin Molex so I can disconnect this harness any time I wish to change out the reel glass. Once it was all in place and powered up, I used the remote control to program the message I want to display on the scrolling display. It's that easy! It took me about an hour to make and I personally think it came out great! Below is the scrolling message display this seller is selling. Click on it to enlarge...>>> Title: Re: I made something different for the S+ today...lol Post by: reho33 on November 08, 2010, 11:34:35 PM K+ I remember you showing me that when I visited. Very cool. Maybe you could use that as the progressive display instead of a Mikon? You would probably have to "hack" into the chip on board and make some kind of an interface but I have faith in ya!

I'm not sure WHAT color you'll get but it'll be different! lol The LEDs are red and combined with a blue lens will make it ???? Title: Re: I made something different for the S+ today...lol Post by: stayouttadabunker on November 10, 2010, 12:38:45 PM lol...I had an old 81 Chevy Monte Carlo quite a few years back and my distributor was shot.
I had no spark going to the plugs! :47- :50- AHHHHHhhh!!!! :8- Since I was out in the middle of nowhere and cell phones at that time were pretty much non-existent - I was stuck. :99- I had a few tools fortunately and pulled the distributor out and found that the wire filament running up to the rotor was broken. :wtf1- I needed a new distributor and there nothing around for miles. :7- Sitting in the car with one foot out the door I was kicking around the dirt and you know what I uncovered? A paper clip! :31- I straightened it out and shoved it into the wire covers into both broken ends and squeezed the distributor down into the engine. Luckily I made a scratch mark on the distributor base before I pulled it out and lined up the distributor back into place and tightened up the bolt holding it. :214- I put the cap back on with all the spark plug wires and turned the key to start the motor. Vroooommmm!!!! I was off and back on the road! :273- :138- I made it all the way home about 360 miles! :20- :294- If that wasn't a "McGuyver move" - I don't know what was... :72- Title: Re: I made something different for the S+ today...lol Post by: poppo on February 05, 2011, 10:50:30 PM First I want to thank stayouttadabunker for posting this interesting thread. I had just happened to come across it while looking for something else.
So I decided to give it a try for myself. I picked up one of the displays on e-bay and decided to document some stuff in case anyone else decides to give this a try, and to share some of the modifications I made. The actual mounting is pretty straight forward as already described, so I won't go over that again. First of all, I thought the display was too bright. After connecting it to my variable power supply, I found that it will operate just fine at 5v but at a reduced brightness. The top of first picture shows it at 12v and then at 5v. It's hard to tell from the picture, but the 5v was a lot easier on the eyes. The bottom of the first picture just shows how easy it is to remove the board from the case. Just take off the screws and cut the two globs of hot glue holding it in. The next thing I didn't like, was that when it is scrolling even at the reduced brightness, it still seemed to be 'blurry'. This was because you can see the LEDs through the red bezel and there was not enough contrast (especially if you are up close to it). I had a bunch of different color candle inserts and tried them all to see how they looked. The dark purple one actually worked the best as it darkened up the unlit LEDs, but did not affect the color when lit. The top of the second picture shows the purple film on the led matrix. The second part shows the difference with the red bezel back on. You can clearly see the difference and how easy it is to see the unlit LEDS with just the original bezel. The last picture shows it with the purple film sandwitched in between and lit. It's really hard to take pictures of this stuff, but the brightness and contrast are now much better. Have you tried automotive glass tint? They come in rolls and different shades. I use it for a Mikohn progressive display unit which looks pretty good ! I think I got one of the darker shades... As far as these plastic films, I think someone mentioned they can be had at toy hobby shops? Title: Re: I made something different for the S+ today...lol Post by: poppo on February 06, 2011, 02:21:02 AM Have you tried automotive glass tint? It was on my list of possible things to try, but I figured I would use what I had on hand first. Title: Re: I made something different for the S+ today...lol Post by: Foster on February 06, 2011, 04:01:51 AM I definitely like
How did you find the displays? Title: Re: I made something different for the S+ today...lol Post by: poppo on February 06, 2011, 12:36:05 PM I definitely like How did you find the displays? I found mine using the earlier post about e-bay. A e-bay search for "12v car scrolling led" will find them. Here is the model, but they can be found a little cheaper if you are patient and wait for an auction vice buy it now. http://cgi.ebay.com/12V-Digital-Car-LED-light-Sign-Message-Moving-Scrolling-/260730295795 (http://cgi.ebay.com/12V-Digital-Car-LED-light-Sign-Message-Moving-Scrolling-/260730295795) There is a blue model too but shipped from the UK http://cgi.ebay.com/Blue-Sucker-car-LED-display-light-scrolling-message-UK-/290504805238 (http://cgi.ebay.com/Blue-Sucker-car-LED-display-light-scrolling-message-UK-/290504805238) BTW LEDs are actually red, so using different color filters does little to change the color. In other words, you can't just make a blue one by changing the bezel color. Title: Re: I made something different for the S+ today...lol Post by: shortrackskater on May 09, 2012, 08:32:24 PM Warning: this topic has not been posted in for at least 120 days.
Unless you're sure you want to reply, please consider starting a new topic. Well I'm going to take a chance here and just pray to the slot gods that Bunker or Poppo or BOTH will reply! I'm preparing to install the scrolling sign to my S plus. I'm going to dig through my stuff and find a 12v power supply. I'm sure I have one somewhere, although I probably should check the current needed. My question is: The 12v lighter plug on the unit has a fuse. Should I fuse it when I install it in the machine or does it really matter since I'll be hooking up the power supply to the outlet in the machine? Title: Re: I made something different for the S+ today...lol Post by: poppo on May 09, 2012, 08:37:15 PM My question is: The 12v lighter plug on the unit has a fuse. Should I fuse it when I install it in the machine or does it really matter since I'll be hooking up the power supply to the outlet in the machine? No real need for the fuse. Just don't pinch the wires anywhere. Also where the wires are soldered to the display, you may want to put a drop of epoxy or something as they are pretty close. That is if you don't leave it in housing. Title: Re: I made something different for the S+ today...lol Post by: shortrackskater on May 09, 2012, 08:46:42 PM Do you know if it will fit in the "machine pays...." area with the housing? I'm not near the machine right now, otherwise I would have done a quick fit test. I'm thinking if it does, I could just add a "skirt" around it in case any extraneous interior light bleeds out.
Title: Re: I made something different for the S+ today...lol Post by: poppo on May 09, 2012, 10:50:02 PM I don't think it will fit with the housing. At least not on a S+.
Title: Re: I made something different for the S+ today...lol Post by: shortrackskater on May 10, 2012, 12:37:19 AM I did just check and it hits the florescent bulb above. BUT... I have a brilliant idea, although I'm going to have to learn how to cut metal. That little piece below the top glass just comes right out and there's plenty of room if I widen from left to the middle area. I'd leave the card entry area there and just plug it with something. I can just route up the power to the upper case. I think I can do this...just the cutting part I'm not sure of yet. Google time.
Title: Re: I made something different for the S+ today...lol Post by: stayouttadabunker on May 10, 2012, 12:53:43 AM Oh! You mean the player tracking plate?
SUre! THAT can be modified any old way you want to but to make it look good is another question. This is where you have to use your imagination really good to make something look like a professional job! :89- Title: Re: I made something different for the S+ today...lol Post by: shortrackskater on May 10, 2012, 01:13:41 AM I do like yours where it is...BUT...I've got that player tracking space above which I can either plug with some dark plastic stuff OR put a cool scrolling display in. I think I will have to reactivate my brain/imagination and make a decision. :72-
Title: Re: I made something different for the S+ today...lol Post by: poppo on May 10, 2012, 02:05:43 AM Oh yeah. A lot easier probably to use the player tracking bar. Not too hard to make a cover. I just used some black posterboard and carpet tape to hold it on. Easy to cut openings for stuff.
Title: Re: I made something different for the S+ today...lol Post by: stayouttadabunker on May 10, 2012, 12:02:42 PM I think you should mass-produce those great little displays Poppo! :131- :89-
Especially with the live % amounts running! The marketing tool would be that players could see where the machine is standing at "percentage-wise" and flock to them! Sell them to casinos world-wide! :71- |
