Title: MPU 502A Post by: cowboygames on December 12, 2010, 02:55:58 AM Can anyone tell me what J5 and J6 sockets are for on a MPU 502A? they look like a socket for SIMM cards and SIMM cards will plug into them, but I'm not gonna try it without knowing :60- It's logical to assume that if they were meant for sound simms the board wouldn't have come with multimedia boards, soooo, who's got the answer? Thanks all for the info :89-
Title: Re: MPU 502A Post by: Foster on December 12, 2010, 03:03:28 AM They are for SIMM's
Not sure what IC' they replace. Title: Re: MPU 502A Post by: cowboygames on December 12, 2010, 03:12:17 AM Thanks Foster, I haven't tried it, but it wou;d be nice if a guy could use those instead of the multimedia board. It would fix the buzzing speaker problem right quick :89- Maybe we can get Bunker to try it and see what happens, he's the adventerous one on here. He sure likes to try stuff and see what he can learn from it, I'm kinda chicken that way :169-
Title: Re: MPU 502A Post by: Foster on December 12, 2010, 03:15:14 AM That could cause the magic smoke to come out of the DSV Simm and or the board.
Title: Re: MPU 502A Post by: cowboygames on December 12, 2010, 03:28:09 AM That's the way MY luck would go, but for Bunker it would probably work great! If the SIMM fits then in theory it's electronically safe, but probably at best keep the game from starting up. At worst it might rewrite the card and erase your sound files. Depends on what it is I suppose :103-
Title: Re: MPU 502A Post by: Forrhouse on December 12, 2010, 08:52:41 AM Actually, the sockets are for a simm with 2 eprom sockets that are used for some extra jurisdiction option. A version chip goes into one of the eprom sockets, but I don't know what goes in the other. Don't plug any sound simms in there. You risk blowing your simms. Ram memory and flash memory, although very different, take a certain voltage, either 5 volt or 3 volt depending on application and year of manufacture. Long story short, standards changed. Even if you have the right voltage it could be going to the wrong place as different chips and types of memory have different configurations and thus different pin assignments.

Title: Re: MPU 502A Post by: stayouttadabunker on December 12, 2010, 03:22:05 PM Well, I DO have an extra DSV00042 to try.... :79-
Title: Re: MPU 502A Post by: cowboygames on December 12, 2010, 04:01:09 PM Bunker, you'd probably get sounds like no one else ever has :97- :97-
Title: Re: MPU 502A Post by: coorslight115 on December 12, 2010, 05:52:30 PM Yeah, they would sound alot like fire engines :200- :98- :98- :98- :192- :192- :192-
Title: Re: MPU 502A Post by: stayouttadabunker on December 12, 2010, 06:40:42 PM I don't think I have a "502A" board....where are you guys getting these numbers from? :72-
Title: Re: MPU 502A Post by: cowboygames on December 12, 2010, 06:58:56 PM Manufacturers tag on the board, but they all have the simm card sockets running alongside the version chip socket. They're white on the 502's and black on the 504's
Title: Re: MPU 502A Post by: Forrhouse on December 12, 2010, 11:32:49 PM Glad I could help on the info guys. I would hate to see good slot boards and simms be damaged.
Happy Holidays, Eric Title: Re: MPU 502A Post by: cowboygames on December 12, 2010, 11:43:24 PM Happy Holidays to you to Eric, thanks for the help :89-
Title: Re: MPU 502A Post by: stayouttadabunker on December 13, 2010, 04:09:43 AM Do you have two sockets for the SG GME chips and another socket
for the Version chip on this MPU cowboy? Title: Re: MPU 502A Post by: cowboygames on December 13, 2010, 04:20:24 AM Yeah Bunker, it's layed out like a normal S2000 MPU, they've all got these simm sockets on them. Only differance is that on the 502 boards the sockets are white and on the 504 boards they're black. Mighta been put in for some future use they had in mind and never got around to using. Look at your s2000 board, it's got them too.
Title: Re: MPU 502A Post by: stayouttadabunker on December 13, 2010, 04:26:25 AM I must agree with Forrhouse and do not put sound SIMM cards in those sockets.
My guess, of course I could be wrong on this, is that those headers were made for some bonus options that need more memory? Maybe for Barcrest games perhaps? I don't know because I don't have a Barcrest type of machine. Anyways, those long headers look more like memory sockets to me than anything else. You see them on the back of an LCD computer in Visions. I have them on my MPU's as well. Title: Re: MPU 502A Post by: cowboygames on December 13, 2010, 04:33:46 AM Would be nice if you could use those instead of multimedia boards though. That would take care of the speaker noise problem :89- Do you know if anyone has a pin out diagram for the MPU multimedia board plugs on these s2000's? I'd like to track the grounding on these. Any way, time to hit the sack, 4:30 comes early in the morning around here. Have a good one
