Title: IGT S cash out button doesn't work
Post by: Rakkasan on December 22, 2010, 12:24:49 PM
Hi guys,
I just received a Red White and Blue machine which I believe is a IGT S model. It was built in Nov of 92. Everything works except for the cash out button. I looked inside and noticed that there were three wires disconnected from the button. I reconnected them and got the light to go on but when I try to cash out winnings I get nothing. I tested the hopper and it works great. Any suggestions?

Yeah, two are for the light bulb, and two are for the switch - you're missing one.  :209-

Check out how the the other switches nearby
are hooked up and follow the same pattern.  :89-

1992 would be an S+, probably.  If you can post a picture or two of the inside and the outside of the machine, we can figure that out.

Welcome to the site, by the way!  :3-

Tom   And  after  you get everything reconnected and in good working order, first or second time someone hit the cash out button with a lot of credits on the machine, your going to be disconnecting it.

Thanks guys!
The cash/credit button only has a spot for three wires. I also looked for a forth wire but couldn't find one. Also, I added coins to the hopper but it keeps paying out one extra coin and then I get the 3100 error.

I will try and post pics asap.

This is why you get the extra coin - the brakes are shot!
It's like trying to stop your car at the stop sign,
but you end up in the middle of the intersection... :5-

Check out all the stuff on the back of the hopper motor...
see what's worn out.

Bunker beat me by 13 seconds.  Grr!

Okay, one thing at a time here.

First, you have an early S+ machine (a step above the "S").

Second, the switch has been physically removed from the cash out button.  (Likely, as Buzz suggested, to prevent people from using it!)  Your picture told 1,000 words.  As Bunker said, look at how the other switches are wired and you would have seen the issue (no worries, we know you're new!).

Look at the switch that's dangling in your picture (green arrow) -- that's the actual micro switch for the cash out button, which has been popped out of the button assembly.  The three wires leading to the button assembly right now are for the light (two blue wires), and a ground wire (green) (which doesn't really do anything, but I digress...).

Third, the 3100 error, as Bunker said, is an "Extra Coin Out" error.  Here (http://www.newlifegames.net/igterrors/) is a list of common S+ errors and how to fix them.  If the 3100 error happens every time the hopper runs, your hopper brake needs some work.  I'd guess that the spring is missing or broken so the brake isn't engaging.  With the power off, if you care to remove your hopper and take a few pictures of that (especially near the motor section near the bottom), we should be able to help diagnose the issue for you.

After you get that working and start looking at the extra coin payout,as mentioned the hopper brake could be bad or you might have a dollar shelf in the hopper and using smaller coins.

you guys are awesome! this is a great forum!

i suppose i should have looked a little harder for the wire. It was right in front of my face.I put it in and now it works. just needs a light bulb because i broke the one i had.

it gives me a 3100 error 99% of the times it pays out so i guess it is the brake. in the picture with my finger, it feels really sloppy. i dont know if it is supposed to or not.

thanks guys for helping me. i would be lost without this site.

let me know what you think of my pics.

thanks!

tom

Great!

125, 126, and 127 show part of the brake mechanism.  When the brake is engaged (normally engaged unless it's trying to pay), the spring that is in those pictures should pull the brake lever and stop the hopper wheel in its tracks.  You have a spring, which is a good thing (I was guessing that it would be missing).

I'm at work and don't have a hopper in front of me to help me figure out how to better explain it and what you need to be looking for, but hopefully one of the other members will chime in soon with some help.  If not, I'll post back in a day or so with better detail.

In a nutshell, the wheel shouldn't be able to rotate with the brake engaged, and should be difficult to turn by hand when the brake isn't engaged.

When the last needed coin goes through the optics, it sends a signal and cuts the
power to the energized copper magnetic band and releases the black brake pawl release handle.
(It's normal for the black handle to feel a little loose or "sloppy" while it's un-energized.)
The spring on the red brake pawl then immediately pulls the red brake pawl
against the blue shaft clutch, catches one of the blue spinning clutch nibs, and stops the shaft.

If the red pawl doesn't stop the shaft - a few things could be wrong.

1). The spring is weak or missing or broken. (yours looks okay really)
2). The red pawl is worn and slips off of the nibs of the blue shaft clutch.
3). The blue clutch nibs are worn or broken and the red brake pawl is jumping off.
4). The spring on the coin optic lever isn't holding down the lever and jumping around
after the last coin goes through - registering one extra coin.

You need to really check the operation of the hopper and all of it mechanisms to see how it's working.
It may just need a good cleaning.

K+, Mark, for the excellent description and picture labeling.  :89-

I got lost somewhere in this thread.  How come the machine is paying out a extra credit if the cash out micro switch was disabled ??

It might be set to drop all coins into the tray on wins - large and small.
That will happen if it doesn't go to the credit meter display.

Thanks Knagl !

Agreed - that was my assumption.

It works!
I took apart the brake assembly and cleaned it up. It works great now.

To sum up...
-The cash credit button problem was fixed by just reconnecting the wires correctly  :279-
-the 3100/extra coin was due to a dirty brake assembly which when cleaned corrected the problem.

thanks for all of your help guys. i donated $30 to help the site out.

Now on to other issues like failing to recognize an inserted coin and trying to quiet the reels...I'll search the site for those answers and if i cant find them i will start a new thread.

Thanks again for all of your help! Merry Christmas!

That's awesome Tom!!!  :3-
There's another thread going on today about somebody having a
bit of a coin/token acceptance problem with their coin comparator.
I'd take look at that and see if there's any of the suggestions there will help ya!

I did a piece on quieting the reels a while back but I don't know where it is...lol
It's not too hard to do and does an excellent job of dimming the noise
one gets from 20-something yr old stepper motors and loose reel baskets.
I'd do a search under "noisy reels" or something like that.
