Title: Help, Replaced u-18 with u-45, machine will not start up
Post by: IFFV68 on December 25, 2010, 03:47:44 PM
OK, here goes,

I took chip u-45 & put it where u-18 is, vica versa.
Started the machine, got RAM error. Shut off machine & put it bacl like the way it was.
Now the machine only lites up. On the bottom left where you read everything, it's dark  & will not lite up.

What have I done? My machine is screwed up

You just messed up all the RAM settings.  Try using a Key chip to set it back up but most likely you will have to Clear the machine and start from scratch.

Put in the key chip & nothing happened. Their was no response.
All the lights came on and the bottom displays were still dark. Could it be I have a bad Key 17 chip?

What should have happened??

Nope, you just screwed up the RAM chips.  Looks like you need to use Clear chip and reset the entire machine.  Why did you pull the RAM to begin with?

Put the key chip in, power it on, wait for the 2 yellow LEDs next to the self-test switch to come on.
Power it off, replace the Key chip with the SB chip, and power it back on.
You should be ready to roll, I'm attaching the Key chip instructions here.

I pulled a rookie mistake,

i had credits left on the machine before I started.
How to clear the credits now?

For the heck of it,put another base chip and see if anything happens.     Is the bottom red LED on the processor board lit or flickering?

I'll give it a try, I believe it has done both, I will double check

I had this happen on my machines a couple times and found I'd knocked the ribbon cable loose on the door I/O to vfd display board connection. I'd hit it taking the mpu out

I got it working with some help from my N.L.G. friends.

The clear 17 chip would not work because the Power Supply didn't turn the complete game on. It would start up & try to turn it's self on & on.
I took a known working Power Supply, did the clear, & Bingo it worked.

A big thanks to Bob @ SAMRON SLOTS
ALSO Ben in AZ. also helped

thank you all, I was a little worried

There is no such thing as a "Clear 17" chip... :129- :128-

IFFV68    Glad you got it fixed

I my opinion you made a couple of mistakes.  when you switched the two ram chips and turned the power on, you at that time erased any credits that were on the machine. Then you got a ram error and that god awful horn sounds. At that time you should have turned the jackpot key 4 or 5 times. the display then  would have told you to press the test button for 3 seconds ( always takes longer than 3 seconds ) The display would now tell you to close the door. Machine will now go through boot up, real good chance you will get another ram error, repeat all the steps again ( sometimes 3 times, if it doesn't clear in three tries do a full clear with 097 clear chip.

You said you replaced the power supply with a known good one. I'm assuming you did a clear when you installed this power supply, if it was me I would change the new power supply with the old one and make sure it's bad. I'd bet good money it's not and at 40 dollars each it's worth a test.

Usually you get the RAM error the first time, then the EEPROM error the second time.

You are correct,
I made a lot of mistakes,
Left credits on machine before I started,
Couldn't get the KEY Chip 17 to seat properly.
When the Key Chip worked I didn't  understand how to do the Ram Error, Reset key must be turned four times to clear. I thought I really messed it up.
Got the error " NEXTPLEX is DOWN or something like that. That is when I changed the power supply & re-installed the KEY 17 chip.
After Ram Clear didn't switch back the U-18 & U-45

Then it came  up on the screen. I'm going to try & put the original power supply back in & see what happens.
I will keep everyone posted.

The original problem was on start up it would go to the self test , the next on and the NEXPLEX it would shut off. Then if the switch was left on it would do the same process over & over until it started. That's when I changed the U-18 & U-45 & got in trouble..
Bob had me change them back & Mike suggested the Power Supply switch.  A Big thanks to all.
I hope this may help out a new person so they won't do what I did. Just didn't think it threw.

IFFV68  Once you switch U 18 and U 45  there is no need to switch them back.
