Title: need help with bill validator and codes Post by: jeffro1 on January 12, 2011, 07:39:52 PM Hi, I'm new to this site (1st day) . Just bought the wife a reel slot- double bow tie, and she loves it but 1 problem, the bill validator is not working. When we turn machine on , we can hear the motor spinning on validator but the front does not light up, but sometimes it will light for a very short time (less than a second). It will not accept a bill at all and seems to not recognize that a bill is being inserted. Been reading about others with same prob. I'm sure the bill stacker is in properly so i dont believe that is the problem. I'm not sure how to bring up the codes on the machine so that would be helpful if someone could explain how i go about that or send me to a link that would explain. I'm new to owning a slot so I need the simplistic lesson on how to do this. this is a great site with so much info, glad I found it -I hope I'm not buggin to much. Heres some pics so you know exactly what machine we have. I hope I'm even posting this in the right section. Thanks so much!
Title: Re: need help with bill validator and codes Post by: poppo on January 12, 2011, 11:00:47 PM If you tell us what SP chip you have, it will be easier to help. But typically you can press the self test button until you get a 9 in the coins played window and will either have a 0 or a 1 in the credits. it needs to be a 1 to have the BV enabled. If it's a 0 then you need a set chip to enable it.
Also does the machine have credits on it? There is a setting to disable the BV after a certain number of credits. <edit> Actually, I am not sure of the procedures/display on a slant top. Title: Re: need help with bill validator and codes Post by: stayouttadabunker on January 12, 2011, 11:55:56 PM Everything is just about the same procedure-wise as an upright machine...
Read this and report back ASAP. It is helpful to know what SP chip you have so we can give you the correct instructions for your machine. The lights on the DBV not lighting up could be a number of things. Loose wire, burned out bulbs or starting to burn out, un-enabled DBV ( you'd need a SET chip to enable or turn it on ), dirty optics, etc,etc... For now, only try a one dollar bill. >>> http://www.newlifegames.net/spset/SPSS.htm (http://www.newlifegames.net/spset/SPSS.htm) Title: Re: need help with bill validator and codes Post by: jeffro1 on January 13, 2011, 12:24:52 AM Thanks for answer. I pushed self test button until coins played flashes 9 and then 0 . It never stopped at 9, just flashes 9 then 0. And while its doing that ,the credits are blank, showing no credits at all. There are no credits on this machine at all. I'm guessing maybe I need a set chip? And would anyone know what set chip I need for this machine? Thanks again for the help! I did forget to add that while the credits are black the coins paid are at 0 0.
Title: Re: need help with bill validator and codes Post by: poppo on January 13, 2011, 12:28:27 AM Thanks for answer. I pushed self test button until coins played flashes 9 and then 0 . It never stopped at 9, just flashes 9 then 0. I think that is the wrong display to be on. That is why we need to know what SP chip you have. Title: Re: need help with bill validator and codes Post by: jeffro1 on January 13, 2011, 12:49:09 AM thanks again..when pushing self test to 4 on coins played ,I get 4714 on winner paid and 0872 on credits...hope that helps to determine what chip it is. as you can tell I'm just learning but with time and some help from my new friends here ,I think I can get this thing figured out. Thanks so much!
Title: Re: need help with bill validator and codes Post by: stayouttadabunker on January 13, 2011, 12:56:07 AM Okay...you have the SP872 chip....
with one of the lousiest chips in the world...an 85% SS reel chip. Whichever casino that machine came out of is one greedy azzed place I hope my behind never falls into! lol Title: Re: need help with bill validator and codes Post by: jeffro1 on January 13, 2011, 12:57:34 AM So where would I go from here?
Title: Re: need help with bill validator and codes Post by: stayouttadabunker on January 13, 2011, 01:02:10 AM Get your mind into this...there's tons to digest...grab a stool and a nice cuppa coffee... :72- >>>
Also, get some soapy water and some paper towels....No alcohol-based solvents. Clean the years of crap off of the clear plastic optics in the DBV, the guides and rollers. That will help bill acceptance. Remember, only use a one dollar bill. Start cleaning the crap outta your machine! Title: Re: need help with bill validator and codes Post by: jeffro1 on January 13, 2011, 01:11:01 AM Ok , so you want me to start there- I will take that sucker apart and start cleaning. I will let you know how it goes. Thanks again, You are AWESOME
Title: Re: need help with bill validator and codes Post by: poppo on January 13, 2011, 01:48:18 AM My question is does it even start to pull a bill in or is it acting like it is dead? If it's not doing anything, you need to fix that first. Cleaning it won't help if it's not enabled or there is another problem.
Here is the PSR for the SP872. Press the self test button twice, then turn the jackpot key until you get the the 9 in the coins played window and see if you have a 0 or 1 in the credit window. The other display you were on was the out of service page I believe. Actually the SP872 is not a bad chip if you have a game like Spin Till You Win that have multiple song sounds. Title: Re: need help with bill validator and codes Post by: jeffro1 on January 13, 2011, 03:34:27 AM I cleaned Validator and nothing happened. It cycles when you close validator door and light on front flashes once very quick but it wont accept a bill at all. I tried pushing self test button twice and turning reset key but I never get a 9 in coins played ,but a 9 comes up on winner paid if you keep turning key and a 1 and zero alternates on credits. I'm really lost at this point and not sure what to do. This thing is driving me crazy and if it wasnt so heavy I would chuck it out the window. Thanks again for trying to help me
Title: Re: need help with bill validator and codes Post by: poppo on January 13, 2011, 03:49:00 AM Ok, I had to try this on one of my older SP chips to double check. From a cold start after power up, open the door and press the self test 3 times. You should have a 0 in the coins played and a 5_X (X=0,1 or 2) in the win meter. NOW turn the reset key until you get a 9_0 or 9_1 in the win meter (should still have a 0 in the coins played). If it says 9-0 the BV is not enabled.
Title: Re: need help with bill validator and codes Post by: jeffro1 on January 13, 2011, 04:16:23 AM Poppo, That worked and I got a 9_1 so it appears that validator is enabled but not working. Do you have any suggestions now how to get this thing to work or maybe it needs to be replaced? If so do you know where I may find one? You are so awesome for helping me out like this. This is a great site and we are so thankful for your help once again!
Title: Re: need help with bill validator and codes Post by: poppo on January 13, 2011, 04:32:47 AM What is the model number on the front of the BV head? Can you take some close up pictures of it? Depending on the model, there are some dip switches that may be set wrong. It could have a bad or disconnected cable, or it could just be a bad head. It sounds like the transport is cycling which is sort of a good sign. On an upright, one would check to make sure the transport is seated properly, but I don't know how a slant top is set up. And there are no credits on the machine right?
Title: Re: need help with bill validator and codes Post by: Foster on January 13, 2011, 04:35:40 AM I would double check and see if the denomination is set!
if it is not set you need a set chip as well Press self test button until 6 shows in coins played the denom will show on the rest of the display 1 = penny 5 = nickel 10 = dime 25 = quarter 50 = half dollar 100 = dollar Title: Re: need help with bill validator and codes Post by: poppo on January 13, 2011, 04:37:38 AM I would double check and see if the denomination is set! Good point. I had that issue once and had forgot to check it. Title: Re: need help with bill validator and codes Post by: jeffro1 on January 13, 2011, 04:53:05 AM Yes Poppo, Heres a pic of model number Thanks
Title: Re: need help with bill validator and codes Post by: jeffro1 on January 13, 2011, 05:03:07 AM I checked denomination by pushing self test until 6 is in coins played , it shows- 4000 in winner paid- 2000 credits. that doesnt sound right
Title: Re: need help with bill validator and codes Post by: poppo on January 13, 2011, 05:11:31 AM I checked denomination by pushing self test until 6 is in coins played , it shows- 4000 in winner paid- 2000 credits. that doesnt sound right No, that does not sound right. I don't have that exact same SP chip, but a similar one. It took 13 presses to get to the 6. The only other display should be 0,1,5,25,etc. in the credit meter. If it says 0, then the denomination is not set. Make sure you are starting from a 'cold start'. Sometimes it's easy to get lost in some of the settings pages, especially on the older SP chips. Title: Re: need help with bill validator and codes Post by: jeffro1 on January 13, 2011, 05:25:25 AM It also took me 13 pushes on selftest- but still got same 4000 and 2000. i also posted pick of dbv in reply 17. Its making me nuts so I'm gonna give up for the night and try again tommorow. I have the rest of the week off to screw with this machine, but it looks like its gonna screw with me! lol Thanks again
Title: Re: need help with bill validator and codes Post by: knagl on January 13, 2011, 06:40:20 AM Jeff-
Where are you located? It's possible that a member is nearby who can help you in person. Also, do you know what casino your machine came from? Finally, when you say that "the front lights up for less than a second", are you talking about the red bezel that says, "Insert Bills", or something else? Welcome to the site. It can be frustrating dealing with these machines sometimes, but rest assured we'll figure out the issue and get your machine back up and running 100%. Title: Re: need help with bill validator and codes Post by: poppo on January 13, 2011, 11:08:31 AM It also took me 13 pushes on selftest- but still got same 4000 and 2000. Well, that sure is odd. Maybe something is corrupt in the eeprom. In any case, you should probably get yourself a set chip and probably a clear chip too. The only way to know for sure is to use it and see what happens. If the denomination setting is hosed, it won't work right, and you won't get any farther until that is fixed. Title: Re: need help with bill validator and codes Post by: jeffro1 on January 13, 2011, 01:58:45 PM Can you recommend where to buy set and clear chips and which ones I will need for this 872? Im located in Calif, fresno area. I also didnt mention and dont know if it matters but when machine pays out it doesnt build up credits, it just pays out quarters. Thanks again everyone for your help
Title: Re: need help with bill validator and codes Post by: Jim on January 13, 2011, 02:20:10 PM you have a regular S+ slant top machine. the top box contains the candle, the award glass and associated lighting, and the bill acceptor unit. you can access the top box by releasing a springloaded latch underneath the top box. it is located behind the main door and about in the middle of the of where the top box sits. all the connections and the power supply for the b/v are located here. there are five components that make up your b/v. the transport/ head unit, the cash can, the power supply, the shelf unit that supports the transport unit and holds the cash can. there are three connections to the head, one from the power supply, one to the b/v bezel and one from the head to the transport. another connector is located on the shelf unit, this connector supplies the data from the optics located in that unit. all these have to be connected for the unit to work. you can let the main power on to do these tests. you can test the b/v unit by simply pulling out the power plug on the front right side of the head. (comes from the black power supply).when you plug it back in you should observe and hear two distinct cycles. a heavy and laborsome motor turning, this is recycling the cash can, then a whiny faster motor turn, this tests the interaction of the head to the transport. try this a few times and you will hear the difference. second test. with everything plugged in and in the idle mode, unplug the small black connector on the front right of the shelf unit. this will cause the unit to cycle continuously, its looking for the cash can, if you plug it in and it stops and resets then the optics are good on the unit. this will tell us everything is doing what it should be doing and the unit could accept a bill.
next, make sure unit is enabled, you already did that by 9_1, the denomination is not right. turn machine off and on. hit the test button, you can run thru the tests using the buttons on the main door. let the door down so you could use the buttons, don't close it just keep it ajar. you can advance to the next test using the bet one button and you could go backwards using the bet max. see PSR. each time you hit the bet 1 button you should advance to the next test, go to each test ( indicated by the number in the coins played window.) a 6 in the coins played window should be the denomination set/ actual reading of what it is set at. you cannot change this if it is locked in (meaning if the spin reels button is active ,pressing it should change the display) get familiar using this menu set up . see if you have one test that displays a 25 in the credits window. continued in next post. Title: Re: need help with bill validator and codes Post by: Jim on January 13, 2011, 02:25:13 PM since the b/v is enabled you should be able to go to the input tests, 1 in the coins played window, hit change button until you get to #27. it should turn on the b/v lamps (provided they are good/ usually led bar in slant tops) if it is on you should be able to insert a bill, it will accept it ,hold it for a few seconds and then return it.

Im located in Calif, fresno area. I also didnt mention and dont know if it matters but when machine pays out it doesnt build up credits, it just pays out quarters. Thanks again everyone for your help With no credits on the machine, press the self test 3 times and you should be at that 5_X with 0 in the coins played window. You probably have 5_1. Use the spin button to change it to 5_0 and all credits will always go to the meter. Or you can set it to 5_2 and it will revert to credit mode after the machine is idle for 30 seconds with no credits. In the 5_2 mode, you can toggle it to pay coins before you start playing by pressing the cash/credit button. Put a WTB in the classifieds for your chips. A SET026 is called for your SP872, but others may work. Title: Re: need help with bill validator and codes Post by: jeffro1 on January 19, 2011, 12:01:36 AM OK I installed new BV and clear chip and set chip ( Thanks Poppo!) But I still have same problem. I set BV to 9_1 and the denom 6-25 but bill validator will not accept a bill , I dont think it even recognizes the bill. Light on front of BV (where it says insert bill) flashes 1 time very quickly when your close BV door and BV cylcles thru . Not sure what to try next. Anyone have an idea for me please? Thanks

Dan #2 reply #23 http://newlifegames.net/nlg/index.php?topic=4226.msg8620#msg8620 That's a good point. The best way to check this is to have the cash can out and look in there with a flashlight. It will be pretty obvious if the rear is not seated. You won't see the tabs and the gear will not be very low in the slot. Here is what it should look like. Title: Re: need help with bill validator and codes Post by: Buzz on January 19, 2011, 12:31:09 AM I guess I'm just lazy. I loosen the two front screws and while holding the front of the head, gently press down on the RED lever. If the rear attempts to move up, the ears aren't hooked in place. I remember all this from the bitch of a time I had with my first S+ ( before NLG )

I remember all this from the bitch of a time I had with my first S+ ( before NLG ) I know my round top can be stubborn. I don't know why, but the transport sometimes won't budge even if it's not seated right. Sometimes it even gets jammed when not put in just right where I have a hard time getting it back out. Something might be slightly bent though. Title: Re: need help with bill validator and codes Post by: Buzz on January 19, 2011, 12:48:13 AM I guess I'm just lazy. I for years have carried a 4" crescent wrench in my pocket, works great to bent them back in shape. They all pop in to my other machine fine. Title: Re: need help with bill validator and codes Post by: jeffro1 on January 19, 2011, 11:37:52 PM Its Fixed! The tabs were bent on the back of the transport so it was not fitting in the cage properly. It is very trickey to get in there just right, but it running great now. Thanks to all and special thanks to Poppo!
